HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

 1-1           WHEREAS, The Lavaca County Courthouse is truly one of the

 1-2     Lone Star State's most noteworthy historical sites, and the

 1-3     striking beauty of the building's architecture is further enhanced

 1-4     by its pivotal role in the county's colorful past; and

 1-5           WHEREAS, In 1897, the Lavaca County Commissioners Court

 1-6     determined to build a courthouse and commissioned architect Eugene

 1-7     T. Heiner of Houston to draw up plans for the building; and

 1-8           WHEREAS, For his design, Mr. Heiner took as his inspiration

 1-9     the Allegheny County Courthouse in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, but

1-10     the new structure was indisputably Texan from the outset; the

1-11     building's main body was constructed from Mineral Wells' brown

1-12     sandstone, with trimmings and columns of gray stone from Mills

1-13     County, and the red granite used in the entrance steps was shipped

1-14     by rail in enormous boulders that were then cut by local workers;

1-15     and

1-16           WHEREAS, Rising above the courthouse's distinctive cruciform

1-17     shape, pyramidal roofs, and Romanesque arches is its most

1-18     remarkable feature, a majestic clock tower, and as this historic

1-19     landmark enters its second century, it continues to charm and

1-20     inspire all those who see it; and

1-21           WHEREAS, Texans are known throughout the world for their

1-22     great  pride in the state's legendary history, and the residents of

1-23     Lavaca County can take justifiable satisfaction in this stirring

1-24     reminder of their forebears; now, therefore, be it

 2-1           RESOLVED, That the 75th Legislature of the State of Texas

 2-2     hereby commemorate the centennial of the commission of the Lavaca

 2-3     County Courthouse.
