HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
1-1 WHEREAS, The passing of Dr. Eugene Morse Addison on December
1-2 25, 1996, at the age of 74, has brought a great loss to the many
1-3 friends and relatives of this esteemed Huntsville physician; and
1-4 WHEREAS, Born May 3, 1922, in Huntsville to Eugene Jesse and
1-5 Larue Howard Morse Addison, he attended school in his hometown and
1-6 pursued his higher education at Sam Houston State University, where
1-7 he earned his bachelor of science degree; he later attained his
1-8 medical degree from Southwestern Medical School in Dallas and
1-9 served his internship at Jeff Davis Hospital in Houston; and
1-10 WHEREAS, Dr. Addison was a patriotic man who served this
1-11 nation as a member of the Army Medical Corps from 1945 to 1948, and
1-12 he continued his service as a lieutenant colonel in the active
1-13 reserve from 1948 to 1959; and
1-14 WHEREAS, On leaving active duty in 1948, he began his medical
1-15 practice in Huntsville and became one of the city's most renowned
1-16 physicians over the course of his 40 years of service as a
1-17 practitioner of obstetrics and general medicine; during that time,
1-18 he also served as chief of staff at Huntsville Memorial Hospital
1-19 for seven terms and as chief of surgery at the facility for four
1-20 terms; and
1-21 WHEREAS, A dynamic presence in the medical field, Dr. Addison
1-22 demonstrated outstanding leadership and judgment as president of
1-23 both the Walker-Madison-Trinity County Medical Society and the
1-24 Ninth District Medical Society; he also held a seat on the board of
2-1 directors of the Texas Academy of Family Practice and maintained
2-2 membership in the American Academy of General Practice, the Texas
2-3 Medical Association, the American Medical Association, the American
2-4 Geriatrics Society, the American Heart Association, and the
2-5 American Academy of Family Physicians; and
2-6 WHEREAS, Among his many notable professional accolades were
2-7 the Award for Meritorious Service from the Texas Academy of General
2-8 Practice, a life membership in the Texas Medical Association, a
2-9 charter fellowship in the American Academy of Family Physicians,
2-10 and the Physician's Recognition Award from the American Medical
2-11 Association, which he was awarded on four separate occasions; and
2-12 WHEREAS, Dr. Addison also devoted his time and energy to a
2-13 number of worthy civic organizations and served as president of
2-14 both the Kiwanis Club and the Huntsville-Walker County Chamber of
2-15 Commerce; in addition, he participated in the Huntsville High
2-16 School Alumni Association, the Sam Houston State University Alumni,
2-17 the Sons of the American Revolution, the Boy Scout Council, the
2-18 Grand Pelory of American Order St. John of Jerusalem Knights
2-19 Hospitaler, and other groups too numerous to mention; and
2-20 WHEREAS, A man of deep religious conviction as well, he was
2-21 an active member of the First Baptist Church, where he taught
2-22 Sunday school classes for more than 40 years and was also a deacon;
2-23 and
2-24 WHEREAS, Dr. Addison was a man of rare compassion and
2-25 understanding; although his warmth and wisdom are gone from us now,
2-26 his remarkable spirit will surely live on in the hearts of the many
2-27 people whose lives he touched during his time on this earth; now,
3-1 therefore, be it
3-2 RESOLVED, That the 75th Legislature of the State of Texas
3-3 hereby honor the life of Dr. Eugene Morse Addison and extend
3-4 sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife of 50
3-5 years, Mary Jane Pond Addison; to his sons, Eugene Morse Addison,
3-6 Jr., and his wife, Annie, and Dr. Paul Davis Addison and his wife,
3-7 Glenda; to his three grandchildren, Eugene Morse Addison III, Sarah
3-8 Larue Addison, and Clifford Paul Addison; and to the many other
3-9 friends and relatives of this beloved gentleman; and, be it further
3-10 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3-11 prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas
3-12 House of Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in
3-13 memory of Dr. Eugene Morse Addison.
