HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

 1-1           WHEREAS, On March 5, 1997, many proud residents of Mount

 1-2     Vernon and Franklin County will be in Austin to celebrate Mount

 1-3     Vernon/Franklin County Day at the State Capitol, and this occasion

 1-4     offers a splendid opportunity to recognize the many noteworthy

 1-5     attributes of this area; and

 1-6           WHEREAS, The fourth-smallest county in Texas, Franklin County

 1-7     is nestled among gently rolling wooded hills, and the streams and

 1-8     lakes that set off the area's picturesque beauty are also popular

 1-9     recreational areas, attracting swimmers, boaters, and fishermen

1-10     throughout the year; and

1-11           WHEREAS, The early history of the region reflects the

1-12     struggles that brought forth the State of Texas, and the Cherokee

1-13     Trace that runs along the county's eastern border stands as a

1-14     reminder of the many Native American tribes that were the area's

1-15     original inhabitants; part of the legendary Cherokee Trail of

1-16     Tears, this path was also traveled by Texas forefathers Sam Houston

1-17     and Davy Crockett; and

1-18           WHEREAS, Consistently ranked as one of the state's top 10

1-19     producers of dairy and poultry products, Franklin County has from

1-20     the beginning been an abundant source of agricultural bounty, and

1-21     hay, blueberries, and peaches are among the area's principal crops;

1-22     more recently, petroleum processing and light manufacturing have

1-23     become mainstays of the local economy; and

1-24           WHEREAS, The county's colorful past is winningly embodied in

 2-1     the county seat, Mount Vernon; the town's lovely central plaza and

 2-2     striking courthouse clock tower lend charm and distinction to  the

 2-3     downtown area, while visitors can learn more about the region at

 2-4     the Franklin County Museum and Franklin County School Heritage

 2-5     Center; and

 2-6           WHEREAS, Franklin County and Mount Vernon are among the Lone

 2-7     Star State's most remarkable assets, and the area's residents can

 2-8     take justifiable satisfaction in their proud history even as they

 2-9     look forward to the challenges and opportunities of tomorrow; now,

2-10     therefore, be it

2-11           RESOLVED, That the 75th Legislature of the State of Texas

2-12     hereby designate March 5, 1997, as Mount Vernon/Franklin County Day

2-13     at the State Capitol and extend to the county's delegation a warm

2-14     welcome and best wishes for continued success and happiness in the

2-15     future.
