HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
1-1 WHEREAS, Both as a civic leader and as a professional, Dr.
1-2 Alfredo Gutierrez, Jr., has greatly contributed to the betterment
1-3 of the Del Rio community, and he is indeed deserving of special
1-4 recognition at this time; and
1-5 WHEREAS, A native of Del Rio, he was graduated from The
1-6 University of Texas at Austin with a bachelor's degree in zoology
1-7 before earning his medical degree from The University of Texas
1-8 Medical Branch at Galveston in 1960; and
1-9 WHEREAS, The next year, after completing his internship in
1-10 family practice at Memorial Hospital in Corpus Christi, he embarked
1-11 on a fulfilling career in Del Rio, where for 35 years his
1-12 exceptional professionalism and concern for his patients have
1-13 earned him the respect and admiration of his community; and
1-14 WHEREAS, Dr. Gutierrez served as chief of staff at Val Verde
1-15 Memorial Hospital in 1979 and 1980, and throughout the years, he
1-16 has offered wise and thoughtful guidance as a member of many of the
1-17 hospital's committees; an acknowledged leader in his chosen field,
1-18 he has continued to share his extensive knowledge and experience
1-19 with others through his involvement with the state and national
1-20 chapters of both the Medical Association and the Academy of Family
1-21 Practitioners; and
1-22 WHEREAS, In addition to his noteworthy career as a physician,
1-23 Dr. Gutierrez is also well known as a public official, and he first
1-24 served as mayor of Del Rio from 1968 to 1980, earning recognition
2-1 as the community's first Hispanic mayor; he returned to that post
2-2 in 1988 and for the past eight years he has represented his fellow
2-3 citizens with the utmost integrity and distinction; and
2-4 WHEREAS, He has further worked in behalf of his community as
2-5 an active member of several boards and commissions, including the
2-6 City of Del Rio Utilities Commission, the City of Del Rio
2-7 International Bridge Board, and the San Felipe Creek Walk
2-8 Association; his continuing service throughout the years has earned
2-9 him much renown, for he was named Mr. Amistad in 1978 by the Good
2-10 Neighbor Council and was recently recognized by the city council of
2-11 Ciudad Acuna, Mexico, for his contributions to the Del Rio/Acuna
2-12 border community; and
2-13 WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, he has been sustained by the
2-14 love and support of his devoted wife, Olga Gutierrez, and the
2-15 couple's seven children; over the course of the years, the
2-16 Gutierrez family has continued to grow, and the couple now delight
2-17 in the company of their nine cherished grandchildren; and
2-18 WHEREAS, Dr. Alfredo Gutierrez, Jr., has enhanced the quality
2-19 of life in the Del Rio community in numerous ways, and his
2-20 outstanding commitment is a source of inspiration to all who are
2-21 privileged to know him; now, therefore, be it
2-22 RESOLVED, That the 75th Legislature of the State of Texas
2-23 hereby honor Dr. Alfredo Gutierrez, Jr., for his exemplary civic
2-24 and professional involvement and extend to him warmest best wishes
2-25 for continued success and happiness in the future; and, be it
2-26 further
2-27 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3-1 prepared for Dr. Gutierrez as an expression of high regard by the
3-2 Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
