                             HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

 1-1           WHEREAS, The Texas Legislature is proud to honor the United

 1-2     Way of the Texas Gulf Coast for 75 years of dedicated service to

 1-3     its community; and

 1-4           WHEREAS, The agency was chartered as Houston Community Chest

 1-5     on August 30, 1922, and has been known by its current name since

 1-6     1979; throughout its proud history, the organization's many

 1-7     hardworking administrators, staff, and volunteers have been

 1-8     committed to enhancing the ability of individuals to help both

 1-9     themselves and others; and

1-10           WHEREAS, The United Way of the Texas Gulf Coast funds more

1-11     than 200 health and human service programs through 78 nonprofit

1-12     agencies and serves residents of Harris, Fort Bend, Waller, and

1-13     Montgomery counties, as well as the Bay Area; and

1-14           WHEREAS, Its more than 80,000 volunteers have given

1-15     generously of their time and talents to assist several worthy

1-16     programs, including Gifts in Kind, the Management Assistance

1-17     Program, Project Blueprint, and the Information and Referral

1-18     Helpline, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year; and

1-19           WHEREAS, The agency has performed an important public service

1-20     by helping to bring parties together to seek solutions to such

1-21     vital issues as homelessness, welfare reform, and community

1-22     empowerment, and its United Way Community Campaigns have raised

1-23     millions of dollars each year to address these and other pressing

1-24     concerns in the Houston area; and

 2-1           WHEREAS, In all its endeavors, the agency has upheld the

 2-2     highest standards of quality and integrity while embracing

 2-3     diversity and inclusiveness, and it was recognized by the United

 2-4     Way of America in 1996 as the first recipient of the Championing

 2-5     Diversity Award; and

 2-6           WHEREAS, For 75 years, the administrators, staff, and

 2-7     volunteers of this fine organization have shared a strong

 2-8     dedication to their community and have worked diligently to benefit

 2-9     its citizens, and the Texas Legislature is proud to honor the

2-10     United Way of the Texas Gulf Coast for the many significant

2-11     contributions it has made to the betterment of the Lone Star State;

2-12     now, therefore, be it

2-13           RESOLVED, That the 75th Legislature of the State of Texas

2-14     hereby honor the United Way of the Texas Gulf Coast on the occasion

2-15     of its 75th anniversary and commend all those associated with the

2-16     agency for their exceptional service in behalf of others; and, be

2-17     it further

2-18           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be

2-19     prepared for the United Way of the Texas Gulf Coast as an

2-20     expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives and

2-21     Senate.
