HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
1-1 WHEREAS, The State of Texas has traditionally recognized a
1-2 variety of official state symbols as tangible representations of
1-3 the proud spirit and heritage of our state; and
1-4 WHEREAS, The bluebonnet, pecan tree, and the mockingbird are
1-5 examples of natural specimens that serve to exemplify the great
1-6 diversity of the Texas landscape, while the state fruit, Red
1-7 Grapefruit, fittingly represents another aspect of our shared
1-8 culture as Texans; and
1-9 WHEREAS, In Keeping with the custom, the designation of the
1-10 Texas Sweet Onion as the official state Vegetable of Texas will
1-11 provide suitable recognition for this outstanding food resource;
1-12 and
1-13 WHEREAS, First discovered and enjoyed by the earliest
1-14 inhabitants of Texas this variety of onion has been carefully
1-15 nutured and perfected over time and is renowned for its sweetness
1-16 and flavor; and
1-17 WHEREAS, The 1015 Onion is recognized by gourmet chefs and
1-18 culinary experts and sought after around the world for its
1-19 sweetness and its inherent properties which inhibits the tearing of
1-20 the eyes while retaining its nutritious and health benefits; and
1-21 WHEREAS, The Lone Star State's reputation as a global leader
2-1 in the development of various varietals of vegetables is well
2-2 deserved, and the development of the 1015 Onion as the first sweet
2-3 onion in the world has contributed greatly to this proud legacy;
2-4 and
2-5 WHEREAS, As distinctive as the proud state from which it
2-6 originates, the Texas Sweet Onion will serve as a fitting emblem
2-7 for the bounties of nature with which our state is blessed; now,
2-8 therefore, be it
2-9 RESOLVED, That the 75th Legislature of the State of Texas
2-10 hereby designate the Texas Sweet Onion as the official State
2-11 Vegetable of Texas.
