No. 149 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, Throughout its history, the city of Weslaco has been 1-2 justly renowned for its friendly people, thriving economy, and 1-3 acclaimed scientific community; and 1-4 WHEREAS, One of Weslaco's greatest contributions to the 1-5 nation is the Official State Fruit of Texas, the Red Grapefruit, 1-6 which was developed at Texas A&M University--Kingsville Citrus 1-7 Center (formerly Texas A&I University Citrus Center) and Texas A&M 1-8 University Agricultural Research and Extension Center, both located 1-9 within this city; and 1-10 WHEREAS, First discovered by a Texas citrus grower in 1929, 1-11 this variety of grapefruit has been carefully nurtured and 1-12 perfected in Weslaco over time and is renowned for its sweetness 1-13 and rich, red interior; and 1-14 WHEREAS, A food that is as nutritious as it is tasty, the 1-15 Texas Red Grapefruit contains no fat or sodium, lowers blood 1-16 cholesterol levels, boosts iron absorption, and is both low in 1-17 calories and rich in Vitamin C; and 1-18 WHEREAS, This delicious fruit is a boon to the state economy, 1-19 generating more revenue than any other tree fruit produced within 1-20 our borders, and as Weslaco's scientific community continues to 1-21 enhance the richness and flavor of the Red Grapefruit, this valued 1-22 agricultural commodity will undoubtedly make further contributions 1-23 to the Lone Star State's economy and culture; now, therefore, be it 1-24 RESOLVED, That the 75th Legislature of the State of Texas 2-1 hereby designate Weslaco as the Red Grapefruit Capital of Texas. 2-2 BEGCAPTION 2-3 Designating Weslaco the Red Grapefruit Capital of Texas. 2-4 ENDCAPTION
