HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, The city of Caldwell is the site of the annual 1-2 Kolache Festival, a daylong celebration of Czech heritage and 1-3 culture; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Held on the second Saturday of September, the 1-5 festival takes its name from kolache, a traditional Czech pastry 1-6 containing meat, cheese, fruit, poppyseed, or a combination of 1-7 various fillings; and 1-8 WHEREAS, Originally served as a wedding pastry, kolache has 1-9 long been a favorite national dessert throughout the Czech 1-10 Republic; early immigrants from that area brought the art of baking 1-11 these special confections to Texas when they settled in the 1-12 Burleson County area; and 1-13 WHEREAS, Today, bakers from around the state display their 1-14 talents at the Kolache Bake Show, a highlight of Caldwell's yearly 1-15 Kolache Festival; participating bakers may compete as professionals 1-16 or nonprofessionals for the titles of Burleson County Champion and 1-17 State Champion; and 1-18 WHEREAS, In addition to the Kolache Bake Show, the festival 1-19 offers demonstrations of such traditional Czech arts as basket 1-20 weaving, egg decorating, stenciling, wood carving, and quilting; 1-21 visitors may also sample a variety of delicious ethnic foods and 1-22 enjoy singing and dancing to lively Czech polkas; and 1-23 WHEREAS, Through their sponsorship of the annual Kolache 1-24 Festival, the citizens of Caldwell continue to preserve and 2-1 revitalize the area's rich Czech heritage; their exceptional 2-2 efforts in this regard will enable many Texans to share and 2-3 appreciate the enduring gifts of the Czechoslovakian culture; now, 2-4 therefore, be it 2-5 RESOLVED, That the 75th Legislature of the State of Texas 2-6 hereby recognize Caldwell as the Kolache Capital of Texas and 2-7 extend sincere best wishes to the town's citizens for the continued 2-8 success of the Kolache Festival; and, be it further 2-9 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-10 prepared for the citizens of Caldwell as an expression of high 2-11 regard by the Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
