                             HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

 1-1           WHEREAS, The recent passing of Emmitt Houston Cavin on

 1-2     February 24, 1997, at the age of 80, has brought a great loss to

 1-3     the family and many friends of this esteemed gentleman; and

 1-4           WHEREAS, Born on October 17, 1916, in Eden, Mr. Cavin enjoyed

 1-5     an extraordinary 45-year career with the Ector County Independent

 1-6     School District (ECISD); his tenure began auspiciously in 1949 when

 1-7     this newly hired agriculture teacher coached Odessa High School's

 1-8     livestock judging team to the national title in Kansas City; and

 1-9           WHEREAS, In 1951, Mr. Cavin was named dean of students at

1-10     Odessa High School and he later accepted a post as principal of

1-11     Bowie Junior High School, a position he held for two decades; in

1-12     1975, he returned to Odessa High School, where he served as

1-13     principal until his retirement in 1984; and

1-14           WHEREAS, After his retirement from ECISD, this industrious

1-15     individual turned his energies to the real estate business, working

1-16     until January 1997 for Sims and Guess Realtors; his honest nature

1-17     and cheerful demeanor made him a natural for this people-oriented

1-18     line of work; and

1-19           WHEREAS, A sports enthusiast beyond compare, the "Boss Hoss"

1-20     was a constant presence at Odessa's sporting events, academic

1-21     competitions, and other school functions, easily recognizable in

1-22     his standard red and white attire and always reflecting the

1-23     tremendous pride he felt for all of his students; and

1-24           WHEREAS, For 25 years, Mr. Cavin served as head timer for the

 2-1     West Texas Relays, a job that allowed him to further feed his

 2-2     passion for athletics; this noteworthy gentleman was also active in

 2-3     the many community service efforts of First Baptist Church, which

 2-4     he joined in 1949; and

 2-5           WHEREAS, Emmitt Houston Cavin was a man of rare dedication

 2-6     and integrity, and although his devotion and guidance will be

 2-7     missed by all who knew him, his spirit will surely live on in the

 2-8     hearts of those individuals whose lives he touched; now, therefore,

 2-9     be it

2-10           RESOLVED, That the 75th Legislature of the State of Texas

2-11     hereby pay tribute to the life of Emmitt Houston Cavin and extend

2-12     sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, Bessie

2-13     Lee Cavin; to his son, Lane Cavin; to his daughters, Vicki Leach

2-14     and Cheryl Cunningham; to his sister, Pauline Alexander; to his

2-15     grandchildren, Jon Leach, Rick Leach, Angela Cunningham, and Ashlee

2-16     Lane Cunningham; and to the many other relatives and friends of

2-17     this beloved gentleman; and, be it further

2-18           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be

2-19     prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas

2-20     House of Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in

2-21     memory of Emmitt Houston Cavin.
