HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

 1-1           WHEREAS, The passing of J. W. "Jim" Spencer, Jr., on May 21,

 1-2     1996, has brought a great loss to the many friends and relatives of

 1-3     this distinguished Texan; and

 1-4           WHEREAS, A native of Fort Worth, Mr. Spencer was born August

 1-5     27, 1925, and was graduated from West Texas State University before

 1-6     earning his master's degree from Sul Ross State University; he wed

 1-7     the lovely Frances Markham on May 8, 1949, and the couple nurtured

 1-8     a happy and fulfilling marriage that spanned 47 years; and

 1-9           WHEREAS, Mr. Spencer was well regarded for his outstanding

1-10     career in the field of public education; he was a principal for 25

1-11     out of his 30 years with the Ector County Independent School

1-12     District, and he served as a member and president of the local

1-13     school board, member and president of the local chapter of the

1-14     Texas State Teachers Association, and member of the Ector County

1-15     Retired Teachers Association, and his outstanding commitment to the

1-16     children of the community was a source of inspiration to many

1-17     people; and

1-18           WHEREAS, Mr. Spencer further served his fellow residents

1-19     through his involvement with several civic and religious

1-20     organizations, and the groups that welcomed his stalwart service

1-21     include the First Baptist Church, the Andy G. Vaughn Masonic Lodge,

1-22     and the Tri Service Lions Club; and

1-23           WHEREAS, A man of great vision, honesty, and good humor, Jim

1-24     Spencer left an indelible mark on the Odessa community during his

 2-1     years on this earth, and though he is gone from us now, his memory

 2-2     will long endure in the hearts and minds of all who were privileged

 2-3     to know him; now, therefore, be it

 2-4           RESOLVED, That the 75th Legislature of the State of Texas

 2-5     hereby pay tribute to the life of J. W. "Jim" Spencer, Jr., and

 2-6     extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his

 2-7     beloved wife, Frances Spencer; to his son and daughter-in-law, Jay

 2-8     and Patricia Spencer; to his daughter and son-in-law, Susie and

 2-9     Alan Bullington; to his three sisters, Annie Meyer, Pauline

2-10     Cummins, and Helen Nunley; to his four grandchildren, Jake Spencer,

2-11     Erica Spencer, Amy Bullington, and  Sara Bullington; to his

2-12     great-grandchild; and to his many other friends and relatives; and,

2-13     be it further

2-14           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be

2-15     prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas

2-16     House of Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in

2-17     memory of J. W.  "Jim" Spencer, Jr.
