                             HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

 1-1           WHEREAS, The Texas Legislature is proud to join its fellow

 1-2     citizens in celebration of Mount Pleasant/Titus County Day at the

 1-3     State Capitol on March 26, 1997; and

 1-4           WHEREAS, Located in the Pine Belt of Northeast Texas, Titus

 1-5     County was created from Bowie and Red River counties in May 1846

 1-6     and was organized two months later with Mount Pleasant as its

 1-7     county seat; and

 1-8           WHEREAS, The region once boasted a thriving timber industry,

 1-9     and today it enjoys a vibrant and diversified economy based on

1-10     agribusiness, industry, tourism, and wholesale and retail trade;

1-11     and

1-12           WHEREAS, Though it is one of the fastest-growing communities

1-13     in Texas, Mount Pleasant has retained its unique charm, earning

1-14     widespread acclaim for its warm and friendly atmosphere; it has

1-15     twice been named one of the 100 Best Small Towns in America, and it

1-16     has been designated a Texas Main Street City as well; and

1-17           WHEREAS, Visitors and residents alike enjoy exploring Titus

1-18     County's vast array of cultural and natural resources; Mount

1-19     Pleasant is hailed as the Bass Capital of Texas, and sports

1-20     enthusiasts can sharpen their fishing skills and partake in a

1-21     variety of water sports at the area's four magnificent lakes; and

1-22           WHEREAS, Individuals of all ages can enjoy many outdoor

1-23     activities throughout the year at the area's eight parks, and

1-24     nature lovers delight in viewing the area's colorful spring

 2-1     wildflowers and impressive fall foliage; tourists can make their

 2-2     visit to the area complete by visiting its thriving art center or

 2-3     by learning more about its unique past at one of Mount Pleasant's

 2-4     interesting museums; and

 2-5           WHEREAS, Rich in culture and tradition, Mount Pleasant and

 2-6     Titus County are prosperous, forward-looking communities and are

 2-7     leading participants in the state's dynamic growth, and it is truly

 2-8     a pleasure to salute this fine region and its people on this

 2-9     auspicious occasion; now, therefore, be it

2-10           RESOLVED, That the 75th Legislature of the State of Texas

2-11     hereby designate March 26, 1997, as Mount Pleasant/Titus County Day

2-12     at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the Titus County

2-13     delegation on their visit to Austin.
