                             HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

 1-1           WHEREAS, Higher education offers students the opportunity to

 1-2     study a wide range of subjects in their quest for greater knowledge

 1-3     and understanding, and the Texas Legislature is proud to declare

 1-4     April 2, 1997, Texas Higher Education Day; and

 1-5           WHEREAS, Many issues directly affect the lives of college

 1-6     students, both in and out of the classroom, and it is important to

 1-7     provide a forum where these individuals can express their concerns

 1-8     about the state of higher education in Texas and the nation; and

 1-9           WHEREAS, The need for continued funding of public

1-10     institutions of higher education and the necessity for increased

1-11     financial aid are of paramount importance to the many men and women

1-12     who choose to follow this worthy path; without these important

1-13     forms of economic support, higher education may suffer, and this

1-14     possibility is unacceptable; and

1-15           WHEREAS, Financial considerations are just one of the

1-16     concerns faced by students, and the continuance of their education

1-17     often depends on a variety of personal and environmental factors;

1-18     Texas Higher Education Day will allow students to discuss their

1-19     views with the state's legislators and can help to ensure that

1-20     higher education opportunities remain available and affordable for

1-21     all Texans; now, therefore, be it

1-22           RESOLVED, That the 75th Legislature of the State of Texas

1-23     hereby declare April 2, 1997, Texas Higher Education Day and

1-24     encourage students of higher education to continue in their pursuit

 2-1     of excellence and their quest for knowledge.
