HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, The Texas Legislature is proud to honor Dr. Frank 1-2 Bash of The University of Texas at Austin for his remarkable 1-3 accomplishments in the field of astronomy; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Dr. Bash has played a pivotal role in the planning, 1-5 design, funding, and construction of the magnificent Hobby-Eberly 1-6 Telescope, which will be one of the finest instruments of its kind 1-7 in the world when it is completed this year, and he brought to this 1-8 groundbreaking endeavor the dedication, vision, and leadership that 1-9 have been his hallmarks throughout his professional career; and 1-10 WHEREAS, After joining the faculty of The University of Texas 1-11 at Austin in 1969, Dr. Bash quickly established a reputation for 1-12 excellence in the classroom; he was equally adept at administration 1-13 and served with distinction as chairman of the Department of 1-14 Astronomy from 1982 through 1986; and 1-15 WHEREAS, Dr. Bash has received a number of well-deserved 1-16 accolades in recognition of his superb achievements as an educator; 1-17 in 1984 he was selected for inclusion in the Teaching Excellence 1-18 Hall of Fame at The University of Texas at Austin, and the 1-19 following year he was named the Frank N. Edmonds Regents Professor 1-20 of Astronomy; and 1-21 WHEREAS, He became director of the McDonald Observatory in 1-22 1989, and his tenure in that demanding role has been notable for 1-23 its public outreach initiatives, including the observatory's 1-24 visitors' center and the StarDate and Universo radio programs, 2-1 which bring information about astronomy and science to millions of 2-2 people each day in English, Spanish, and German; and 2-3 WHEREAS, Throughout history, humankind has sought to unravel 2-4 the secrets of the universe, and Dr. Frank Bash's continuing 2-5 commitment to analyzing and understanding these great mysteries 2-6 makes him truly worthy of special legislative recognition at this 2-7 time; now, therefore, be it 2-8 RESOLVED, That the 75th Legislature of the State of Texas 2-9 hereby commend Dr. Frank Bash for his many significant 2-10 contributions in the field of astronomy, particularly his role in 2-11 the realization of the Hobby-Eberly Telescope, and extend to him 2-12 sincere best wishes for continued success in the future; and, be it 2-13 further 2-14 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-15 prepared for Dr. Bash as an expression of highest regard by the 2-16 Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
