                             HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

 1-1           WHEREAS, State law (Section 2165.256, Government Code)

 1-2     specifies those persons eligible for burial in the State Cemetery

 1-3     and authorizes the legislature to grant eligibility to other

 1-4     persons through the adoption of a concurrent resolution; and

 1-5           WHEREAS, The descendants of Jesse F. and Mildred Crain

 1-6     Burditt have requested that these early pioneers be reinterred in

 1-7     the State Cemetery, which would provide a fitting final resting

 1-8     place for such noteworthy Texans; and

 1-9           WHEREAS, A native of South Carolina, Mr. Burditt was born in

1-10     1787; he married the former Mildred Crain, and the couple moved to

1-11     Texas by 1833; several years later, Mr. Burditt took an active role

1-12     in the Texas Revolution, joining Captain William Kimbro's company

1-13     and serving with distinction at the Battle of San Jacinto; and

1-14           WHEREAS, His contributions to his adopted home continued

1-15     through the days of the Republic of Texas, as he carried the mail

1-16     each week from Nacogdoches to Fort Jessup, Louisiana, and in the

1-17     earliest days of the Lone Star State he served as Travis County

1-18     Commissioner; and

1-19           WHEREAS, Mr. Burditt and his wife passed away more than a

1-20     century ago, and they were buried in the Fiskville Cemetery in

1-21     Austin; sadly, the grave sites have fallen victim to vandalism and

1-22     disrepair over the years, and the dilapidated site provides a poor

1-23     memorial for these prominent settlers; and

1-24           WHEREAS, Texans take deep pride in their history and have

 2-1     shown a continued reverence for those who fought and died for the

 2-2     freedom of this great state; the men and women who secured the

 2-3     blessings of liberty for this land are entitled to a dignified and

 2-4     peaceful final resting place, and the Texas State Cemetery is the

 2-5     most appropriate burial ground for such deserving individuals; now,

 2-6     therefore, be it

 2-7           RESOLVED, That the 75th Legislature of the State of Texas

 2-8     hereby authorize the burial of Jesse F. Burditt, Sr., and Mildred

 2-9     Crain Burditt in the State Cemetery, provided proper application

2-10     for assignment of burial space is made to the General Services

2-11     Commission as required by law; and, be it further

2-12           RESOLVED, That the secretary of state forward an official

2-13     copy of this resolution to the executive director of the General

2-14     Services Commission.
