                             HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

 1-1           WHEREAS, Poetry immortalizes the spirit of the age and the

 1-2     cultural heritage by which it was inspired; and

 1-3           WHEREAS, Recognizing outstanding poets in this state by

 1-4     bestowing on them titles of honor is a worthy tribute and serves as

 1-5     an encouragement to other talented Texas poets; and

 1-6           WHEREAS, It is appropriate that the Legislature of the State

 1-7     of Texas designate as Poet Laureate one who has exhibited

 1-8     exceptional ability in capturing the beauty of this state, some

 1-9     facet of its history, or the proud spirit of its people; now,

1-10     therefore, be it

1-11           RESOLVED, That the 75th Legislature of the State of Texas

1-12     hereby request the speaker of the house of representatives and the

1-13     lieutenant governor to create a special committee to designate a

1-14     Poet Laureate for the State of Texas for the year beginning July

1-15     1, 1997, and ending June 30, 1998, and a Poet Laureate for the year

1-16     beginning July 1, 1998, and ending June 30, 1999; and, be it

1-17     further

1-18           RESOLVED, That the special committee be named the Texas Poet

1-19     Laureate Committee and be composed of three members of the house of

1-20     representatives to be appointed by the speaker of the house and

1-21     three members of the senate to be appointed by the lieutenant

1-22     governor; the speaker of the house and the lieutenant governor

1-23     shall each designate a cochair from among their appointees, and the

1-24     committee shall subsequently meet at the call of the cochairs; and,

 2-1     be it further

 2-2           RESOLVED, That a person designated as Poet Laureate of Texas

 2-3     be a superior and recognized poet who is a citizen of the State of

 2-4     Texas.
