HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

 1-1           WHEREAS, In August 1997, Dr. Edwin E. Lehr is retiring as

 1-2     president of San Jacinto College's North campus, drawing to a close

 1-3     a distinguished career in the field of education that has spanned

 1-4     40 years; and

 1-5           WHEREAS, Dr. Lehr was born in Baytown, and he received both a

 1-6     bachelor's degree and a master's degree from Sam Houston State

 1-7     University before earning a doctorate from Texas Christian

 1-8     University in 1972; and

 1-9           WHEREAS, A former high school teacher, he began his career

1-10     with San Jacinto College in 1961; highly regarded for his

1-11     expertise, professionalism, and dedication, he was named chairman

1-12     of the history department and director of the college's Clear Creek

1-13     Extension School; and

1-14           WHEREAS, Dr. Lehr became president of San Jacinto College's

1-15     North campus in 1981, in which capacity he has continued to have a

1-16     profound effect on the quality of higher education in the Houston

1-17     metropolitan area; and

1-18           WHEREAS, His tenure with the college has been marked by many

1-19     significant accomplishments; the founder and sponsor of several

1-20     campus organizations, he was instrumental in the development of the

1-21     school's upper division college and was a valued member of former

1-22     Governor Preston Smith's Goals for Texas Committee; and

1-23           WHEREAS, In addition to his noteworthy career as an educator,

1-24     Dr. Lehr is a former member and chairman of the Deer Park Planning

 2-1     and Zoning Commission, and he also served on the Deer Park City

 2-2     Council for two terms in 1969 and 1973, during which time he sought

 2-3     solutions to a host of important matters through his participation

 2-4     with several city committees; and

 2-5           WHEREAS, He has continued to work for the betterment of his

 2-6     community through his exemplary civic involvement; a former Harris

 2-7     County grand juror, he has been active in several chambers of

 2-8     commerce in the area, and he has been a valued member of both the

 2-9     North Channel Emergency Medical Services Board and Champion Paper

2-10     Company's Scholarship Committee for 17 years; and

2-11           WHEREAS, Dr. Lehr's vast achievements have earned him

2-12     well-deserved acclaim; he has been honored with numerous accolades

2-13     and was appointed by former Governor Mark White to serve with the

2-14     Texas Conservation Corps Advisory Board from 1985 to 1988; and

2-15           WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Dr. Lehr has enjoyed the love

2-16     and support of his devoted wife, Dovie Jo Lehr, and the couple's

2-17     three children, Eddie, Lynda, and Holly; and

2-18           WHEREAS, Edwin Lehr has enhanced the quality of life and

2-19     education in the Houston metropolitan area in numerous ways, and he

2-20     is indeed worthy of special praise and recognition at this time;

2-21     now, therefore, be it

2-22           RESOLVED, That the 75th Legislature of the State of Texas

2-23     hereby congratulate Dr. Edwin E. Lehr on his outstanding service as

2-24     president of San Jacinto College's North campus  and extend to him

2-25     warmest best wishes for a happy and rewarding retirement; and, be

2-26     it further

2-27           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be

 3-1     prepared for Dr. Lehr as an expression of high regard by the Texas

 3-2     House of Representatives and Senate.
