                             HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

 1-1           WHEREAS, The passing of Naomi Stribling Vanduring on May 21,

 1-2     1997, has brought a great loss to the family and many friends of

 1-3     this beloved Houstonian; and

 1-4           WHEREAS, Mrs. Vanduring was born to Ned and Eva Stribling in

 1-5     Sulphur Springs and completed her education at Texas Southern

 1-6     University; she wed the Reverend Leonard Vanduring, and the couple

 1-7     treasured the time they shared until his passing; and                     

 1-8           WHEREAS, Mrs. Vanduring was employed in the retail industry

 1-9     with Battelstein's and Frost Brothers department stores, and she

1-10     maintained an active involvement in the community both as the judge

1-11     of Harris County Precinct Number 365 for 13 years and as a member

1-12     of Shepherd Park Terrace Civic Club; and

1-13           WHEREAS, A deeply religious woman, she renewed her spiritual

1-14     strength as an active member of Greater New Hope Missionary Baptist

1-15     Church, and she further served her faith through her participation

1-16     in several religious organizations, including the South Texas

1-17     District Association, the National Baptist Convention of America,

1-18     Inc., the Missionary Baptist Convention of Texas, the Baptist

1-19     Sisterhood of Houston, and the Order of Calanthe; and

1-20           WHEREAS, Her remarkable work in behalf of others brought her

1-21     well-deserved acclaim, for the City of Houston declared a day in

1-22     her honor in 1988; and

1-23           WHEREAS, Mrs. Vanduring touched the lives of many people

1-24     during her years on this earth, and though her special presence

 2-1     will be deeply missed, her memory will long endure in the hearts

 2-2     and minds of all who knew and loved her; now, therefore, be it

 2-3           RESOLVED, That the 75th Legislature of the State of Texas

 2-4     hereby pay tribute to the life of Naomi Stribling Vanduring and

 2-5     extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: to her

 2-6     daughters and sons-in-law, Sherrell Conway, Bernadette and Clyde

 2-7     Johnson, Linda and Jesse Lusk, and Stephanie and Louis Ross; to her

 2-8     son and daughter-in-law, Leonard Vanduring, Jr., and Sharon

 2-9     Vanduring; to her brothers and sisters-in-law, George and Georgia

2-10     Stribling and Billy Ned and Arvis Stribling; to her grandchildren,

2-11     John Conway, Jr., LaTrece Conway, Chantique Vanduring, Tiffany

2-12     Vanduring, Samuel Vanduring, Monique Lusk, Jessica Lusk, Theron

2-13     Michael Lusk, Cornelius Walker, Jr., Cedric Walker, Leonard Walker,

2-14     Edward Walker, Cicerly Walker, Lauren Ross, and Meghan Ross; and to

2-15     her many other friends  and relatives; and, be it further

2-16           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be

2-17     prepared for the members of her family and that when the Texas

2-18     House of Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in

2-19     memory of Naomi Stribling Vanduring.
