No. 320 75R17250 BNL-D HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, The Texas Legislature is proud to congratulate 1-2 former State Representative Karyne Jones Conley on her latest 1-3 career achievements with SBC Telecommunications, Inc., in 1-4 Washington, D.C.; and 1-5 WHEREAS, A native San Antonian, Ms. Conley earned a 1-6 bachelor's degree in political science from Clark Atlanta 1-7 University in Georgia and a master's degree in public affairs from 1-8 Northern Illinois University; in 1995, she completed her second 1-9 master's degree at Harvard University, focusing on the study of 1-10 economic and political development; and 1-11 WHEREAS, Ms. Conley began her distinguished public service 1-12 career in our nation's capital as a congressional aide to former 1-13 U.S. Representative Andrew Young of Georgia, and when he was 1-14 appointed by then-President Jimmy Carter to the post of Ambassador 1-15 to the United Nations, the youthful Miss Jones served as Young's 1-16 Public Affairs Officer at the United States Mission to the United 1-17 Nations in New York City; and 1-18 WHEREAS, After returning to her hometown of San Antonio, 1-19 Ms. Conley drew upon her deep interest in both education and the 1-20 arts as Director of the Carver Cultural Center and as a grant 1-21 writer for The University of Texas Institute of Texan Cultures; she 1-22 also served as Program Developer for Continuing Education at San 1-23 Antonio College, and in 1985, she was elected to her first public 1-24 office, the East Central Independent School District Board of 2-1 Trustees; and 2-2 WHEREAS, Highly regarded throughout the community for her 2-3 professionalism, integrity, and dedication, this esteemed lady was 2-4 elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 1988, representing 2-5 eastern San Antonio and Bexar County and was re-elected without 2-6 opposition in 1990, 1992, and 1994; during her four terms of 2-7 office, Representative Conley demonstrated intelligence and 2-8 leadership as a member of the Appropriations, House Administration, 2-9 Corrections, and Judiciary committees, and she was tapped to serve 2-10 as vice-chair of the House's Urban Affairs Committee; and 2-11 WHEREAS, Since July 1996, Ms. Conley has served with 2-12 distinction as Director of Federal Relations with SBC 2-13 Telecommunications, Inc., in Washington, D.C., and although this 2-14 position has temporarily drawn her away from her beloved San 2-15 Antonio, her neighbors and many friends in the Lone Star State are 2-16 hopeful that she will eventually return home; and 2-17 WHEREAS, In this, as in all of her endeavors, Ms. Conley has 2-18 enjoyed the love and support of her family, which includes her 2-19 husband, attorney Jim Conley, and four children: James, Jason, 2-20 John, and Karyne Jalon; and 2-21 WHEREAS, Both in her personal life and in her professional 2-22 service, the Honorable Karyne Jones Conley has exhibited an abiding 2-23 concern for the well-being of her fellow Americans, and she is 2-24 indeed deserving of recognition as she pursues this new chapter of 2-25 her life; now, therefore, be it 2-26 RESOLVED, That the 75th Legislature of the State of Texas, 2-27 Regular Session, 1997, hereby congratulate former State 3-1 Representative Karyne Jones Conley on her new position with SBC 3-2 Telecommunications, Inc., and extend to her warmest best wishes for 3-3 continued success; and, be it further 3-4 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 3-5 prepared for Ms. Conley as an expression of highest regard by the 3-6 Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
