                                 A JOINT RESOLUTION

 1-1     proposing a constitutional amendment to allow the legislature to

 1-2     prescribe the qualifications of constables.

 1-3           BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:

 1-4           SECTION 1.  Section 18, Article V, Texas Constitution, is

 1-5     amended by adding Subsection (g) to read as follows:

 1-6           (g)  The Legislature by general law may prescribe the

 1-7     qualifications of constables.

 1-8           SECTION 2.  This proposed constitutional amendment shall be

 1-9     submitted to the voters at an election to be held November 4, 1997.

1-10     The ballot shall be printed to permit voting for or against the

1-11     proposition:  "The constitutional amendment to allow the

1-12     legislature to prescribe the qualifications of constables."
