 1-6                           HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

 1-7     proposing a constitutional amendment to allow the legislature to

 1-8     prescribe the qualifications of constables.

 1-9           BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:

1-10           SECTION 1.  Section 18, Article V, Texas Constitution, is

1-11     amended by adding Subsection (g) to read as follows:

1-12           (g)  The Legislature by general law may prescribe the

1-13     qualifications of constables.

1-14           SECTION 2.  This proposed constitutional amendment shall be

1-15     submitted to the voters at an election to be held November 4, 1997.

1-16     The ballot shall be printed to permit voting for or against the

1-17     proposition:  "The constitutional amendment to allow the

1-18     legislature to prescribe the qualifications of constables."
