R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, Today, January 15, 1997, marks the 50th birthday of
1-2 our esteemed colleague, Barry Miller, whose loyalty and dedication
1-3 to the house as executive assistant to the speaker are rivalled
1-4 only by his great love for the State of Texas and that for which it
1-5 stands; and
1-6 WHEREAS, This fine gentleman began his legislative career in
1-7 the employ of Speaker Laney when the presiding officer was first
1-8 elected to the house in 1972 and, more than two decades later, he
1-9 remains an integral part of the dynamic duo and a marvel to all who
1-10 know him; and
1-11 WHEREAS, Likened to Arnold Schwarzenegger in a three-piece
1-12 suit, "the enforcer" is widely known as a people person, for he
1-13 makes it a point to personally get to know each and every member
1-14 who crosses his path; in fact, it has often been said of Mr. Miller
1-15 that, with his limitless patience, smiling countenance, and ability
1-16 to see only the good in people, he could have been a contender for
1-17 Mr. Congeniality of the House had he only agreed to part with his
1-18 trusty brass knuckles; and
1-19 WHEREAS, When this happy-go-lucky guy isn't visiting members'
1-20 offices, he can often be found closeted in his office yakking it up
1-21 on the telephone, as there is nothing he likes better than engaging
1-22 in a little chitchat over the phone with his 150 friends in the
1-23 house, which may in part account for his 6 a.m. arrival each
1-24 morning and his ability to make the trains run on time; and
2-1 WHEREAS, Outside the statehouse, Mr. Miller enjoys spending
2-2 time with his immediate family, Bud and Mac, who have taught their
2-3 master how to chew things over; and
2-4 WHEREAS, Though none of us is getting any younger, this fine
2-5 gentleman only gets wiser with each passing year and it gives the
2-6 members of this chamber great pleasure to share with him the
2-7 recognition he so richly deserves on his special day; now,
2-8 therefore, be it
2-9 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas
2-10 Legislature hereby congratulate Barry Miller on the momentous
2-11 occasion of his 50th birthday and extend to him warmest best wishes
2-12 for continued good fortune and happiness in the years to come; and,
2-13 be it further
2-14 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-15 prepared for Mr. Miller as an expression of highest regard by his
2-16 colleagues in the Texas House of Representatives.
