By Jones of Dallas H.R. No. 26 75R3831 SAJ-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The passing of Mable M. Chandler on January 13, 1-2 1997, at the age of 81, has brought a great loss to the many 1-3 friends and relatives of this accomplished Texan; and 1-4 WHEREAS, She was born December 2, 1915, in Cass County and 1-5 was graduated summa cum laude from Tillotson College before earning 1-6 her master's degree from the University of Iowa; and 1-7 WHEREAS, For more than 30 years, Mrs. Chandler was a positive 1-8 role model to countless Texans as a classroom teacher and counselor 1-9 with several schools in the Dallas Independent School District, and 1-10 she also taught evening classes at Bishop College Center for 15 1-11 years; and 1-12 WHEREAS, In addition, this remarkable lady served her 1-13 community as Superintendent of the Sunday school at Greater New 1-14 Zion Baptist Church of Dallas for more than 40 years and further 1-15 gave generously of her time and talents as a teacher in the Upward 1-16 Bound Program at Southern Methodist University; and 1-17 WHEREAS, Her remarkable service in behalf of others earned 1-18 her much renown; she was honored with several prestigious 1-19 accolades, including Woman of the Year awards from both Zeta Phi 1-20 Beta and United for Action, St. Mark's Home Mission Ministries 1-21 Humanitarian Award, and the Dallas Black History Chronicle's 1995 1-22 Legends in Education Marion Butts Award, and the 1954 graduating 1-23 class of Lincoln High School established a scholarship foundation 1-24 in her honor in 1994; and 2-1 WHEREAS, During her lifetime, Mable Chandler touched the 2-2 lives of many people, and though her presence will be deeply 2-3 missed, her memory will long endure in the hearts and minds of all 2-4 who came to know and love her; now, therefore, be it 2-5 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas 2-6 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Mable M. Chandler and 2-7 extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: to her 2-8 stepdaughter, Dorothy Mae Chandler Brown; to her granddaughter, Ara 2-9 Evelyn Latimar; to her stepbrother, Morris Hopkins; to her 2-10 sister-in-law, Mrs. Marshall Hopkins; and to her many other friends 2-11 and relatives; and, be it further 2-12 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-13 prepared for the members of her family and that when the Texas 2-14 House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of 2-15 Mable M. Chandler.
