No. 35 75R3943 JHS-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, January 28, 1997, will certainly be a special day 1-2 for Don Legg, for on that day he will celebrate his 90th birthday; 1-3 and 1-4 WHEREAS, Mr. Legg has dedicated much of his life to serving 1-5 the public on the local, state, and national levels, and as he 1-6 enters his 10th decade, his contributions continue to be felt; and 1-7 WHEREAS, During the dark years of World War II, Mr. Legg 1-8 served as director of personnel for the Red Cross, overseeing more 1-9 than 1,900 employees in the Pacific Theater and helping to provide 1-10 an indispensable service to the Allied forces; at the conclusion of 1-11 the war, he assisted in the processing and relocation of Red Cross 1-12 workers, and he remained with this valuable organization for a 1-13 total of 17 years; and 1-14 WHEREAS, In 1969, Mr. Legg returned to Kemp after retiring 1-15 from Prudential Insurance in Dallas; this homecoming allowed him 1-16 the opportunity to renew his commitment to the citizens of Kemp and 1-17 to devote his considerable energies to the betterment of this fine 1-18 city; and 1-19 WHEREAS, Since the 1970s he has served as either president or 1-20 secretary of the Kemp Chamber of Commerce, and his work with this 1-21 group has done much to promote the city's many attributes; Mr. Legg 1-22 also spent four years on the city council and has been active on 1-23 the boards of the Kaufman County Improvement Commission and the 1-24 county board of the Visiting Nurses Association; and 2-1 WHEREAS, Mr. Legg's other volunteer efforts include assisting 2-2 in census-taking and working as a deputy voter registrar for the 2-3 past 12 years; in addition, he has done much to advance the role of 2-4 the community's senior citizens during his three terms with the 2-5 Kaufman County Senior Citizens Advisory Committee; and 2-6 WHEREAS, Mr. Legg's strong interest in amateur athletics is 2-7 demonstrated by his 15-year commitment to the Kemp Athletic 2-8 Boosters Club, and his dedication to helping young people was 2-9 further witnessed when he helped to raise $25,000 to send the Kemp 2-10 band to perform in Orlando, Florida; and 2-11 WHEREAS, Mr. Legg remains a vital and visible member of the 2-12 Kemp community, and his love of journalism, which first surfaced 2-13 when he worked for the Austin American-Statesman as a young man, is 2-14 as strong as ever; he continues to cover events in Kemp as a 2-15 reporter, photographer, and proofreader for The Monitor, and he 2-16 shows no signs of slowing down any time soon; and 2-17 WHEREAS, Don Legg has earned the affection and respect of all 2-18 who know him for his dedication to his community and his country, 2-19 and this commendable Texan is indeed worthy of special recognition 2-20 on this memorable occasion; now, therefore, be it 2-21 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas 2-22 Legislature hereby honor Don Legg on the occasion of his 90th 2-23 birthday and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued 2-24 success and happiness in the future; and, be it further 2-25 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-26 prepared for Mr. Legg as an expression of high regard by the Texas 2-27 House of Representatives.
