                                 R E S O L U T I O N

 1-1           WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives takes special

 1-2     pleasure in honoring Earl H. Elam for his outstanding record of

 1-3     service at Sul Ross State University; and

 1-4           WHEREAS, Born December 7, 1934, in Wichita Falls, he served

 1-5     his country with distinction from 1953 to 1957 as a member of the

 1-6     United States Navy, and his actions earned him National Defense and

 1-7     China Service citations and the good conduct medal; and

 1-8           WHEREAS, On completing his military service, he attended

 1-9     Midwestern State University where he earned a bachelor's degree in

1-10     history; he continued his higher education at Texas Tech

1-11     University, attaining a master's degree in American history and a

1-12     doctorate in history at that esteemed institution; and

1-13           WHEREAS, Dr. Elam began his career as an educator in 1961 as

1-14     an American history teacher with Lubbock High School and remained

1-15     in Lubbock until 1971, serving as a graduate teaching assistant and

1-16     part-time instructor with Texas Tech University; and

1-17           WHEREAS, In 1971 he joined the staff of Sul Ross State

1-18     University as an assistant professor, and in addition to his

1-19     classroom work, he brought his talent and dedication to bear as

1-20     acting chairman of the Department of History; and

1-21           WHEREAS, Extremely gifted both as a lecturer and

1-22     administrator, he quickly rose to the level of full professor and

1-23     also made significant contributions to the university as chairman

1-24     of the History Department, director of the Division of Social

 2-1     Sciences, vice president for Academic Affairs, and director of the

 2-2     Center for Big Bend Studies, and his retirement in August 1995

 2-3     brought to a close a truly stellar career at Sul Ross State

 2-4     University; and

 2-5           WHEREAS, The efforts of this distinguished teacher to improve

 2-6     the quality of education in the State of Texas are indeed worthy of

 2-7     special legislative recognition; now, therefore, be it

 2-8           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas

 2-9     Legislature hereby commend Earl H. Elam for his quarter century of

2-10     service at Sul Ross State University; and, be it further

2-11           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be

2-12     prepared for Dr. Elam as an expression of high regard by the Texas

2-13     House of Representatives.
