R E S O L U T I O N

 1-1           WHEREAS, The arrival of the Texas Legislature in Austin is an

 1-2     event eagerly anticipated by lawmakers and locals alike, and on

 1-3     February 5, 1997, the River City will extend a warm welcome to

 1-4     these distinguished visitors at the Great Austin Bash; and

 1-5           WHEREAS, For many years known primarily as the home of the

 1-6     State Capitol and The University of Texas, Austin has also become a

 1-7     magnet for businesses from around the world, and the city's high

 1-8     quality of life, unspoiled natural beauty, and educated workforce

 1-9     have convinced a remarkable number of companies, including some

1-10     notable high-tech success stories, to set up shop  here; and

1-11           WHEREAS, Austin's reputation as a mecca for music, the arts,

1-12     and entertainment is well deserved, and the astounding array of

1-13     talented artists and performers to be found on any given night

1-14     remains one of the city's greatest assets; and

1-15           WHEREAS, The city's growth as an economic powerhouse has both

1-16     strengthened and benefited from its international reputation as a

1-17     center for education and the arts, and even as major corporations

1-18     and the university enter into far-reaching and mutually beneficial

1-19     agreements, Austin's entertainment industry has come into its own,

1-20     making the city a regional production center for music, film, and

1-21     television; and

1-22           WHEREAS, A popular destination for tourists from around the

1-23     globe, Austin offers a rich and exciting range of possibilities for

1-24     visitors, and it is hoped that legislators will find time in their

 2-1     busy schedules to sample some of its many attractions; they are

 2-2     assured an enthusiastic reception as Austinites extol their

 2-3     hometown's charms in an attempt to prove to the city's

 2-4     distinguished guests that the natives are indeed friendly;  and

 2-5           WHEREAS, The city's goodwill toward visiting legislators will

 2-6     become apparent on the evening of February 5, 1997, when lawmakers

 2-7     will be the honored guests at the Great Austin Bash, hosted by

 2-8     their colleagues in the Travis County Legislative Delegation and a

 2-9     plethora of notable Austinites, including representatives of the

2-10     Austin American-Statesman, the City of Austin, the Downtown Austin

2-11     Alliance, the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce, the Radisson

2-12     Hotel on Town Lake, The University of Texas, and Travis County; and

2-13           WHEREAS, The event will be characterized by the warm

2-14     hospitality for which Austin and Texas are known, and music by

2-15     legendary singer-songwriter Jerry Jeff Walker and western swing

2-16     masters Asleep at the Wheel will ensure a festive evening for all

2-17     present; now, therefore, be it

2-18           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas

2-19     Legislature hereby recognize February 5, 1997, as the Day of the

2-20     Great Austin Bash and extend to the event's hosts and organizers

2-21     best wishes for a successful and enjoyable evening.
