R E S O L U T I O N

 1-1           WHEREAS, The Grapevine High School Mustangs football team has

 1-2     reached the pinnacle of success by winning the 1996 University

 1-3     Interscholastic League (UIL) Class 4-A, Division 1 championship,

 1-4     the school's first gridiron title in its history; and

 1-5           WHEREAS, Having finished the regular season without a loss,

 1-6     the Mustangs carried their unblemished record into a bi-district

 1-7     matchup with Spruce High School and cruised to a 41-6 victory; and

 1-8           WHEREAS, Grapevine faced West Mesquite High School in its

 1-9     next postseason contest, and the Mustangs dominated the game both

1-10     offensively and defensively, prevailing 42-13; and

1-11           WHEREAS, In the quarterfinal round, this determined Grapevine

1-12     squad took the field against Mt. Pleasant High School and emerged

1-13     the victor by a score of 31-14 to continue its relentless march

1-14     through the playoffs; and

1-15           WHEREAS, Confronting Pampa High School in the semifinals,

1-16     Grapevine again demonstrated its championship mettle, winning 31-14

1-17     to claim a coveted berth in the state title game; and

1-18           WHEREAS, Facing Hays Consolidated High School with the state

1-19     crown on the line, the Mustangs refused to be denied, overcoming

1-20     their opponent 34-19 to complete the season with a perfect record

1-21     of 15 wins against no defeats and claim their first ever state

1-22     football championship; and

1-23           WHEREAS, The season's outstanding achievements were a result

1-24     of total commitment to the team concept by members Jared Windom,

 2-1     Jake Kohan, Antwonne McQuarters, Matt Baan, Mark Collop, Jonathan

 2-2     Knutz, T. J. Howard, Steve Sands, Cody Spencer, Chico Sanchez,

2-17           WHEREAS, Head Coach Mike Sneed provided superb leadership and

2-18     discipline throughout the course of the campaign, and his

2-19     remarkable efforts helped the Mustangs to reach their cherished

2-20     goal of a state title; he was ably supported in his endeavors by

2-21     assistant coaches Bill Symon, Roger Benefield, Scott Goodwin, Tim

2-22     Baxter, Gary Olivo, Heath Bullard, Gary Mullins, Scott Lee, Dave

2-23     Fuller, Dave Sammons, Tim McCune, J. T. Grubbs, Andy Modica, Bruce

2-24     Holmes, Bill McClesky, and Terry Hooks; trainers Robert Carlson and

2-25     Tamara Kirchman; managers Richard Crow and Emily Sneed; and

2-26     athletic director Ted Brevelle; and

2-27           WHEREAS, This exceptional group of young men, with their

 3-1     coaches and staff, is a source of tremendous pride to the students

 3-2     and faculty at Grapevine High School and their many supporters in

 3-3     the community, and their historic athletic accomplishment is indeed

 3-4     worthy of special legislative recognition; now, therefore, be it

 3-5           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas

 3-6     Legislature hereby congratulate the Grapevine High School Mustangs

 3-7     on winning the 1996 UIL Class 4-A, Divison 1 football championship

 3-8     and extend to them sincere best wishes for continued success in the

 3-9     future; and, be it further

3-10           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be

3-11     prepared for the team members and coaching staff as an expression

3-12     of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
