R E S O L U T I O N

 1-1           WHEREAS, The passing of Harry Lee Hafernick on October 12,

 1-2     1996, at the age of 76, has brought a great loss to the family and

 1-3     many friends of this esteemed gentleman; and

 1-4           WHEREAS, Born September 15, 1920, Mr. Hafernick was reared on

 1-5     a farm near El Campo, where he developed what would become a

 1-6     lifelong enthusiasm for agriculture; after his graduation from El

 1-7     Campo High School in 1938, he attended The University of Texas at

 1-8     Austin on a track scholarship and later served for four years in

 1-9     the United States Navy as a lieutenant during World War II; and

1-10           WHEREAS, After completing his military service, this longtime

1-11     community servant taught school for two years before turning to

1-12     rice farming full time; a resident of Jackson County since 1954,

1-13     Mr. Hafernick was a member and past president of many notable

1-14     organizations, including the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce,

1-15     the Edna Independent School Board, the Gulf Coast Association of

1-16     Soil and Water Conservation, and the Lavaca-Navidad River

1-17     Authority; and

1-18           WHEREAS, The citizens of Jackson County recognized

1-19     Mr. Hafernick's many contributions to the community when they named

1-20     him their Man of the Year in 1967; he received another prestigious

1-21     honor in 1971 when he was named the outstanding conservation farmer

1-22     of Texas; and

1-23           WHEREAS, A dedicated family man, Mr. Hafernick and his wife,

1-24     Mildred, enjoyed a long and happy union that was blessed with two

 2-1     daughters and a son; his membership at First United Methodist

 2-2     Church provided this devout man with both strength and comfort, and

 2-3     his service on its board of directors and annual barbecue committee

 2-4     allowed him the opportunity to help spread the church's important

 2-5     message; and

 2-6           WHEREAS, Harry Lee Hafernick was a man of determination and

 2-7     integrity, whose concern for his fellow citizens was an inspiration

 2-8     to all who knew him, and although his guidance and devotion has

 2-9     been missed, his spirit surely lives on in the hearts of the many

2-10     people whose lives he touched; now, therefore, be it

2-11           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas

2-12     Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Harry Lee Hafernick

2-13     and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his

2-14     wife, Mildred Meek Hafernick; to his daughters, Edie Hafernick and

2-15     Ann Mozisek; to his son, Lee Hafernick; to his sisters, Isabel

2-16     Gossett and Evelyn Rice; to his brothers, Frank Hafernick and John

2-17     Hafernick; to his seven grandchildren; and to the many other

2-18     relatives and friends of this beloved gentleman; and, be it further

2-19           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be

2-20     prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas

2-21     House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of

2-22     Harry Lee Hafernick.
