R E S O L U T I O N

 1-1           WHEREAS, The recent passing of Maximo Quintanilla, Sr., on

 1-2     November 8, 1996, at the age of 70, has brought a great loss to the

 1-3     family and many friends of this beloved gentleman; and

 1-4           WHEREAS, Born on June 6, 1926, Mr. Quintanilla grew up in the

 1-5     small Texas town of  Tilden, a 200-strong community known locally

 1-6     as "Dogtown"; after completing the sixth grade, his formal

 1-7     education was interrupted when his father's illness forced him to

 1-8     quit school and  go to work to help support his family; and

 1-9           WHEREAS, A hardworking man all his life, Mr. Quintanilla did

1-10     whatever it took to  provide for his family, from picking cotton to

1-11     managing a restaurant; this industrious individual eventually

1-12     became his own boss when he purchased a small cafe, where patrons

1-13     came as much for the pleasure of this good-natured man's company as

1-14     for the tasty food he provided; and

1-15           WHEREAS, Mr. Quintanilla was a veteran of World War II,

1-16     proudly serving in the United States Army during his country's time

1-17     of need; he was well known for his efforts to assist his neighbors

1-18     in Tilden, and his devotion to the education of Dogtown's young men

1-19     was considerable; and

1-20           WHEREAS, A lifelong sports fan, he had a particular passion

1-21     for the Great American Pastime, and this southpaw was a pitcher of

1-22     some renown within his community; he was also an energetic

1-23     outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting game and fowl on the brushy plains

1-24     of McMullen County and fishing the Frio River with friends and

 2-1     family; and

 2-2           WHEREAS, Maximo Quintanilla was a man of integrity and

 2-3     compassion, and though his guidance and devotion will be missed by

 2-4     those people whose lives he touched, his spirit will certainly live

 2-5     on in the hearts of all who knew him; now, therefore, be it

 2-6           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas

 2-7     Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Maximo Quintanilla,

 2-8     Sr., and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to

 2-9     his wife, Maria Garza Quintanilla; to his sons, Maximo Quintanilla,

2-10     Jr., Paul Quintanilla, Hector Quintanilla, and Leo Quintanilla; to

2-11     his daughters, Roselinda Kortis, Mary DeLeon, and Sandra Bookout;

2-12     to his 20 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and to the

2-13     many other relatives and friends of this esteemed gentleman; and,

2-14     be it further

2-15           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be

2-16     prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas

2-17     House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of

2-18     Maximo Quintanilla, Sr.
