R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Joshua Clark Davis has reached the loftiest plateau 1-2 in the field of athletic endeavor by winning three gold medals in 1-3 the sport of swimming during the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in 1-4 Atlanta; and 1-5 WHEREAS, A native of San Antonio, Mr. Davis was a vital 1-6 member of the United States swim team's 4x100 individual medley, 1-7 4x200 freestyle, and 4x100 freestyle relay squads, each of which 1-8 earned gold-medal distinction, and he was the only male athlete to 1-9 win three gold medals at the Centennial Olympic Games; and 1-10 WHEREAS, Mr. Davis was graduated from Churchill High School, 1-11 and while attending there he helped the male swimming team to win 1-12 four consecutive Texas State Swimming Championships; he is 1-13 currently pursuing a degree in speech and communication at The 1-14 University of Texas at Austin and continues to train as a member of 1-15 the U.S. National Swimming Team; and 1-16 WHEREAS, In recognition of his sterling achievements as a 1-17 swimmer, Mr. Davis was named the 1996 San Antonio Express-News 1-18 Sportsman of the Year, an accolade that in previous years has been 1-19 bestowed on such sports notables as David Robinson, Ty Detmer, and 1-20 Shaquille O'Neal; and 1-21 WHEREAS, He has been supported throughout his career by his 1-22 parents, Michael and Joan Davis, and he has also received the love 1-23 and encouragement of his wife, the former Shantel Cornelius; and 1-24 WHEREAS, Joshua Clark Davis's exceptional contributions to 2-1 the United States men's swimming team throughout the course of the 2-2 1996 Summer Olympic Games are a source of tremendous pride to the 2-3 city of San Antonio, the State of Texas, and the United States of 2-4 America, and it is indeed fitting that he receive special 2-5 legislative recognition at this time; now, therefore, be it 2-6 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas 2-7 Legislature hereby honor Joshua Clark Davis for his outstanding 2-8 athletic achievements in the sport of swimming and extend to him 2-9 sincere best wishes for continued success in all future endeavors; 2-10 and, be it further 2-11 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-12 prepared for Mr. Davis as an expression of high regard by the Texas 2-13 House of Representatives.
