R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The House of Representatives of the State of Texas 1-2 takes pride in joining citizens across the nation in recognizing 1-3 National LULAC Week and in proclaiming February 16-22, 1997, as 1-4 National LULAC Week in the State of Texas; and 1-5 WHEREAS, The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) 1-6 was founded in the city of Corpus Christi on February 17, 1929, by 1-7 individuals of vision and determination; their goal was to improve 1-8 the lives of Hispanic citizens and to find solutions to problems in 1-9 the fields of civil rights, education, and government; and 1-10 WHEREAS, Since its establishment, LULAC has fought for the 1-11 civil rights of Hispanics and other minorities and has provided job 1-12 training and found employment opportunities for thousands of 1-13 minority citizens through the highly successful Jobs for Progress, 1-14 Inc., better known as "SER"; and 1-15 WHEREAS, The organization has helped to provide housing for 1-16 Hispanics in need and has launched a wide variety of programs for 1-17 youths, women, and the elderly; through its National Education 1-18 Service Center, it has helped Hispanic youths to seek higher 1-19 education and has provided more than $2 million in scholarships; it 1-20 influenced the formation of the Head Start program through its 1-21 creation of the "Little Schools of the 400"; and 1-22 WHEREAS, LULAC has helped to initiate litigation against 1-23 segregation of Hispanics in public schools that has guaranteed 1-24 Hispanics various constitutional rights; and 2-1 WHEREAS, The oldest and largest Hispanic civil rights 2-2 organization in the country, LULAC is an exemplary organization 2-3 that has helped Hispanics throughout the United States enjoy a 2-4 greater degree of participation in the affairs of their 2-5 communities; now, therefore, be it 2-6 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the State of 2-7 Texas, 75th Legislature, hereby commend the League of United Latin 2-8 American Citizens on its exceptional accomplishments and declare 2-9 February 16-22, 1997, as National LULAC Week in Texas; and, be it 2-10 further 2-11 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be prepared for 2-12 presentation to the Honorable Belen Robles, LULAC national 2-13 president, from El Paso, Texas, and to Mr. Gonzalo Tamez, president 2-14 of Corpus Christi LULAC Council No. 1, as an expression of esteem 2-15 from the Texas House of Representatives.
