R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, Texas Southern University will mark a significant
1-2 milestone this year as faculty, students, and alumni celebrate the
1-3 50th anniversary of the school's creation; and
1-4 WHEREAS, Located near the heart of downtown Houston, the
1-5 institution was established in 1947 for the express purpose of
1-6 serving black students in Texas; since that time, the school has
1-7 expanded its efforts to educate people of all races, creeds, and
1-8 colors; and
1-9 WHEREAS, The university's seven schools and colleges provide
1-10 outstanding educational opportunities for more than 10,000
1-11 individuals; the majority of its students hail from Harris County,
1-12 but 114 other Texas counties, 40 states, three territories, and 68
1-13 countries are also represented in the faculty and student body; and
1-14 WHEREAS, The institution boasts one of the largest
1-15 concentrations of multi-ethnic scholars in the world; in 1991, the
1-16 university employed 517 full-time and part-time faculty members,
1-17 and 70 percent of its full-time instructors hold a doctorate or
1-18 equivalent in their field of expertise; and
1-19 WHEREAS, Throughout its proud history, Texas Southern
1-20 University has effectively addressed the educational needs of its
1-21 community, and in doing so, it has greatly enhanced the
1-22 educational, social, and cultural fabric of our state; now,
1-23 therefore, be it
1-24 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas
2-1 Legislature hereby commemorate the 50th anniversary of Texas
2-2 Southern University and commend its administrators and staff for
2-3 their many years of exceptional service to the people of Texas;
2-4 and, be it further
2-5 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-6 prepared for Texas Southern University as an expression of high
2-7 regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
