R E S O L U T I O N

 1-1           WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to honor

 1-2     Everett L. Turbon for his notable service to his community as an

 1-3     educator and administrator at St. Philip's College in San Antonio;

 1-4     and

 1-5           WHEREAS, Reared in the east side of San Antonio, Mr. Turbon

 1-6     began his higher education at St. Philip's College, and after

 1-7     graduating from that fine institution, he continued his pursuit of

 1-8     academic excellence at Xavier University, where he earned his

 1-9     bachelor's degree, and then New York University, where he attained

1-10     his master's degree; and

1-11           WHEREAS, At the request of Miss Artemisia Bowden, one of the

1-12     original founders of St. Philip's College, he returned to his alma

1-13     mater and taught math, sociology, and education; he also served the

1-14     college in such varied and demanding capacities as chairman of the

1-15     social sciences department and as director of guidance and

1-16     counseling; and

1-17           WHEREAS, When he retired from St. Philip's College as

1-18     professor/director of counseling emeritus in 1984, he was the Alamo

1-19     Community College District's longest-tenured employee, having drawn

1-20     to a close a distinguished career in education that spanned 36

1-21     years; and

1-22           WHEREAS, In addition to his work at St. Philip's, this

1-23     committed individual has devoted his time and energy to serve as a

1-24     board member for such worthy concerns as the United Way, the Healy

 2-1     Murphy Center, and the San Antonio Public Library System, the

 2-2     latter of which he also served as president; and

 2-3           WHEREAS, A man of deep and abiding religious faith as well,

 2-4     Mr. Turbon was invested into the Order of St. Gregory The Great, an

 2-5     honor bestowed by the Pope that is the highest possible for a

 2-6     layman; and

 2-7           WHEREAS, Everett L. Turbon is an inspiration to all Texans

 2-8     devoted to improving the quality of education in this state, and

 2-9     his many significant achievements are indeed worthy of special

2-10     legislative recognition; now, therefore, be it

2-11           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas

2-12     Legislature hereby commend Everett L. Turbon for his many decades

2-13     of service to the people of Texas as an educator and as a dedicated

2-14     civic leader; and, be it further

2-15           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be

2-16     prepared for Mr. Turbon as an expression of high regard by the

2-17     Texas House of Representatives.
