R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, On April 28, 1997, Edward E. Whitacre, Jr., will be
1-2 honored by the World Affairs Council of San Antonio as the 1997
1-3 International Citizen of the Year, and this singular distinction is
1-4 truly worthy of special praise and recognition; and
1-5 WHEREAS, A native Texan, Mr. Whitacre received a bachelor's
1-6 degree in industrial engineering from Texas Tech University;
1-7 employed by Southwestern Bell as a student engineer even before his
1-8 graduation, his tenure there culminated in his being named
1-9 president of the company's Kansas division; and
1-10 WHEREAS, Since 1984, Mr. Whitacre has been associated with
1-11 the communications company SBC, and he now serves as the company's
1-12 chairman of the board and chief executive officer; and
1-13 WHEREAS, Mr. Whitacre's business acumen and sound judgment
1-14 have established him as a welcome presence in boardrooms across the
1-15 country, and he currently serves as a director for Anheuser-Busch
1-16 Companies, the Emerson Electric Company, May Department Stores
1-17 Company, and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation; and
1-18 WHEREAS, A vital and valued member of the community,
1-19 Mr. Whitacre's contributions extend far beyond his professional
1-20 position; an executive vice president of the National Council of
1-21 the Boy Scouts of America, he also chairs the Board of Regents of
1-22 Texas Tech University and has contributed his time and talent to
1-23 the Witte Museum Foundation and the Southwest Research Institute;
1-24 and
2-1 WHEREAS, The esteem in which Mr. Whitacre is held by his
2-2 peers is aptly reflected in the many honors that he has been
2-3 accorded, including the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce's
2-4 Freeman Award, the Texas Tech University Outstanding Executive
2-5 Award, and the Southwest CEO Council Advisory Directors'
2-6 Distinguished Achievement Award; he was also named Financial
2-7 World's 1995 CEO of the Year and has received an honorary Doctor of
2-8 Laws degree from Maryville College; and
2-9 WHEREAS, Edward E. Whitacre, Jr., has throughout his life and
2-10 career demonstrated not only his outstanding abilities as a
2-11 businessman and engineer but also his heartfelt desire to share his
2-12 gifts with others for the common good, and it is indeed appropriate
2-13 that he be recognized for his many accomplishments at this time;
2-14 now, therefore, be it
2-15 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas
2-16 Legislature hereby congratulate Edward E. Whitacre, Jr., on being
2-17 named the 1997 International Citizen of the Year by the World
2-18 Affairs Council of San Antonio and extend to him sincere best
2-19 wishes for continued success in the years to come; and, be it
2-20 further
2-21 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-22 prepared for Mr. Whitacre as an expression of high regard by the
2-23 Texas House of Representatives.
