R E S O L U T I O N

 1-1           WHEREAS, The dedication and commitment to the medical

 1-2     profession demonstrated by Dr. John P. Howe III have indeed made

 1-3     this Texan worthy of special legislative recognition; and

 1-4           WHEREAS, Dr. Howe currently serves as president of the

 1-5     well-regarded University of Texas Health Science Center at San

 1-6     Antonio, where he oversees the many schools and programs within the

 1-7     university and is a tenured professor in the Department of

 1-8     Medicine; and

 1-9           WHEREAS, This respected gentleman's educational background

1-10     includes a bachelor's degree from Massachusetts' Amherst College

1-11     and a medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine; in

1-12     addition, he served for two years in the United States Army Medical

1-13     Corps and is a graduate of Harvard Business School's Health Systems

1-14     Management Program; and

1-15           WHEREAS, A leader in the biosciences, Dr. Howe is a past

1-16     president of the Bexar County Medical Society, the Texas Society

1-17     for Biomedical Research, and the local chapter of the American

1-18     Heart Association; his numerous honors and awards include the U.S.

1-19     Army's Commander's Award for Public Service, the People of Vision

1-20     Award from the Texas Society to Prevent Blindness, and the

1-21     Distinguished Alumnus Award from his medical school alma mater; and

1-22           WHEREAS, In an effort to further medical knowledge, Dr. Howe

1-23     has devoted much time and energy to assisting worthwhile research

1-24     groups such as the Pew Health Professions Commission and the United

 2-1     States Air Force Scientific Advisory Board; his counsel and opinion

 2-2     have been sought by organizations nationwide, and he recently

 2-3     distinguished himself as the United States representative at a

 2-4     Tri-National Conference on Health in Mexico City; and

 2-5           WHEREAS, In the face of growing public health concerns around

 2-6     the world, our society needs the guidance of individuals with Dr.

 2-7     Howe's status and experience as we head into the next century, and

 2-8     it is a distinct honor for the members of this chamber to pay

 2-9     tribute to this esteemed gentleman; now, therefore, be it

2-10           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas

2-11     Legislature hereby honor Dr. John P. Howe III for his contributions

2-12     to the field of medicine and extend to him sincere best wishes for

2-13     continued success and happiness in the years to come; and, be it

2-14     further

2-15           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be

2-16     prepared for Dr. Howe as an expression of high regard by the Texas

2-17     House of Representatives.
