R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, Texans are known throughout the world for the fierce
1-2 pride they take in their colorful history, and the residents of
1-3 Howe are no exception; in 1997, they will commemorate the 125th
1-4 anniversary of the community's founding, and this singular occasion
1-5 is indeed worthy of special recognition; and
1-6 WHEREAS, Originally known as Summit, the settlement grew up
1-7 around a Houston and Texas Central Railroad depot and initially
1-8 consisted of nothing but the station and a store, but these
1-9 buildings were soon joined by Mayor J. S. Quinn's inn and the
1-10 town's first house, a log cabin built by Jabez Haning; and
1-11 WHEREAS, The year 1884 marked the incorporation of Howe,
1-12 named after railroad superintendent Major F. M. Howe, and the town
1-13 began to grow and flourish; the rich black soil of the region
1-14 sustained a variety of agriculture, and for a time Howe was the
1-15 largest inland grain market in the nation; and
1-16 WHEREAS, Though the days of the great railroads are long
1-17 past, the residents of Howe are still imbued with the hardy pioneer
1-18 spirit of their forebears, and even as they take satisfaction in
1-19 their hometown's fascinating past, they look forward to the
1-20 challenges and opportunities of the years to come; now, therefore,
1-21 be it
1-22 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas
1-23 Legislature hereby congratulate the residents of Howe on the 125th
1-24 anniversary of the community's founding and extend to them sincere
2-1 best wishes for continued success and happiness in the future.
