                                 R E S O L U T I O N

 1-1           WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to honor

 1-2     Dr. Philip Edward Thorpe, a leader in the field of cancer research

 1-3     at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, for his

 1-4     outstanding work in behalf of his fellow Texans; and

 1-5           WHEREAS, A native of Worcestershire in the United Kingdom, he

 1-6     was graduated from the University of Liverpool before continuing on

 1-7     to earn a doctorate at the Clinical Research Centre in London in

 1-8     1975; and

 1-9           WHEREAS, He is well regarded throughout his area of expertise

1-10     for his professionalism, knowledge, and dedication, and since 1991

1-11     he has been a professor of pharmacology at The University of Texas

1-12     Southwestern  Medical Center at Dallas, where he holds the Serena

1-13     S. Simmons Distinguished Chair in Cancer Immunopharmacology; and

1-14           WHEREAS, A pioneer in the field of vascular targeting, Dr.

1-15     Thorpe is the senior researcher on a team that has developed a new

1-16     blood-clotting drug to destroy cancer tumors, promising fewer side

1-17     effects than are associated with surgery, radiation, or

1-18     chemotherapy; and

1-19           WHEREAS, The findings from his groundbreaking study were

1-20     recently published in the journal Science; the drug he helped to

1-21     engineer is expected to be tested on humans within two years, and

1-22     it may one day provide an effective and less debilitating treatment

1-23     for many individuals diagnosed with cancer; and

1-24           WHEREAS, For many years, Dr. Thorpe has stood at the

 2-1     forefront of cancer research, and he received the Pierce

 2-2     Immunotoxin Award for his noteworthy achievements in 1988;

 2-3     throughout all his endeavors, he has enjoyed the love and support

 2-4     of his family, which includes his wife, Catherine, and the couple's

 2-5     two young sons, James and Elliot; and

 2-6           WHEREAS, Dr. Thorpe's remarkable service has earned him the

 2-7     heartfelt gratitude of countless individuals, and he is indeed

 2-8     worthy of our highest praise and recognition at this time; now,

 2-9     therefore, be it

2-10           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives  of the 75th

2-11     Texas Legislature hereby commend Dr. Philip Edward Thorpe for his

2-12     exceptional contributions to the medical arts and extend to him

2-13     warmest best wishes for continued success and happiness in all his

2-14     future endeavors; and, be it further

2-15           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be

2-16     prepared for Dr. Thorpe as an expression of highest regard by the

2-17     Texas House of Representatives.
