No. 231 75R7495 JHS-F R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives takes pride in 1-2 joining the American Heart Association, Texas Affiliate, 1-3 Incorporated, in recognizing February 25, 1997, as American Heart 1-4 Association Day in Texas; and 1-5 WHEREAS, The American Heart Association is a nonprofit 1-6 voluntary health organization that is dedicated to the reduction of 1-7 disability and death from cardiovascular diseases and stroke; and 1-8 WHEREAS, Each year, more than 220,000 volunteers in Texas 1-9 dedicate their time and energy to supporting the research, 1-10 education programs, and advocacy efforts of the American Heart 1-11 Association; and 1-12 WHEREAS, In 1996, 400,000 Texans received training as 1-13 participants in the association's cardiopulmonary resuscitation and 1-14 advanced cardiac life-support training programs; in addition, the 1-15 association funded $6.9 million in meritorious cardiovascular 1-16 research projects in our state; and 1-17 WHEREAS, The association has distributed heart health 1-18 education materials and programs to millions of Texans in order to 1-19 increase the public's knowledge of the risk factors related to 1-20 heart disease and stroke; heart disease remains the number one 1-21 cause of death in Texas, while strokes are the primary cause of 1-22 disability; and 1-23 WHEREAS, Thanks to the efforts of the American Heart 1-24 Association and its many volunteers, as well as the contributions 2-1 of numerous individuals, families, foundations, and corporations, 2-2 cardiovascular disease is now declining in our state, and the 2-3 tremendous accomplishments of these concerned groups and 2-4 individuals are truly deserving of special legislative recognition; 2-5 now, therefore, be it 2-6 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas 2-7 Legislature hereby recognize February 25, 1997, as American Heart 2-8 Association Day in Texas and commend the many volunteers and 2-9 contributors who are working to curtail the incidence of 2-10 cardiovascular disease in our state; and, be it further 2-11 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-12 prepared for the American Heart Association, Texas Affiliate, 2-13 Incorporated, as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of 2-14 Representatives.
