R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Anice Barber Read began her lifelong interest in 1-2 historic preservation as a volunteer in her hometown of Fort Worth, 1-3 where she worked to help save precious community landmarks; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Her interest and effectiveness were recognized by 1-5 Governor John B. Connally, who appointed her to the Texas 1-6 Historical Commission in 1969, where she served with distinction 1-7 for seven years; and 1-8 WHEREAS, On the admonition of Executive Director Truett 1-9 Latimer, she accepted a staff position after conclusion of her 1-10 services as commissioner; and 1-11 WHEREAS, One of her first undertakings was the development of 1-12 Texas' application to be selected for the Main Street 1-13 revitalization program of the National Trust for Historic 1-14 Preservation; and 1-15 WHEREAS, Her efforts resulted in the state's becoming a 1-16 charter participant in this imaginative community initiative, after 1-17 which she became its first Main Street program director, and she 1-18 has since nurtured successful endeavors in scores of Texas 1-19 communities with the help of a succession of first ladies; and 1-20 WHEREAS, She has worked toward her goals, and her legendary 1-21 homemade chocolate cakes have become the most renowned incentive in 1-22 state government for greasing the wheels of progress; and 1-23 WHEREAS, Her unbounded optimism, her dedicated leadership, 1-24 and her indefatigable determination have caused Texas to gain 2-1 repeated national recognition for excellence and unsurpassed 2-2 achievement, causing one elected official to declare: "It's the 2-3 most cost-effective program in the state government"; and 2-4 WHEREAS, In the course of setting a standard of integrity and 2-5 performance, she has touched and helped mold the lives of countless 2-6 young Main Street managers; and 2-7 WHEREAS, She retired as a deputy director of the Texas 2-8 Historical Commission under Executive Director Curtis Tunnell on 2-9 August 31, 1996, after more than a quarter century of service, 2-10 under five separate governors, leaving a rich legacy in the 2-11 preservation and revitalization of scores of communities across 2-12 Texas; and 2-13 WHEREAS, She was blessed throughout her life by a loving and 2-14 supportive family, including her husband, Julian Read; her two 2-15 daughters, Courtney Hoffman and Ellen Read; and her three 2-16 grandchildren, Faye Hoffman, Kathryn Hoffman, and Read Hoffman; 2-17 now, therefore, be it 2-18 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas 2-19 Legislature hereby commend Anice Barber Read as an expression of 2-20 gratitude on behalf of all Texans for her numerous contributions to 2-21 our heritage and let this resolution be passed in her honor; and, 2-22 be it further 2-23 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-24 prepared for her husband and her two daughters as an expression of 2-25 highest regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
