R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Anice Barber Read began her lifelong interest in 1-2 historic preservation as a volunteer in her hometown of Fort Worth 1-3 where she worked to help save precious community landmarks; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Her interest and effectiveness were recognized by 1-5 Governor John B. Connally, who appointed her to the Texas 1-6 Historical Commission in 1969, where she served with distinction 1-7 for seven year; and 1-8 WHEREAS, On the admonition of the Executive Director Truett 1-9 Latimer, she accepted a staff position after conclusion of her 1-10 services as Commissioner; and 1-11 WHEREAS, One of her first undertakings was the development of 1-12 Texas' application to be selected for the Main Street 1-13 revitalization program of the National Trust for Historic 1-14 Preservation; and 1-15 WHEREAS, Her efforts resulted in the state becoming a charter 1-16 participant in this imaginative community initiative, after which 1-17 she became its first Main Street Program Director, and since has 1-18 nurtured successful endeavors in scores of Texas communities with 1-19 the help of a succession of first ladies; and 1-20 WHEREAS, She has worked toward her goals, her legendary 1-21 homemade chocolate cakes have become the most renowned incentive in 2-1 state government for greasing the wheels of progress; and 2-2 WHEREAS, Her unbounded optimism, her dedicated leadership and 2-3 her indefatigable determination have caused Texas to gain repeated 2-4 national recognition for excellence and unsurpassed achievement, 2-5 causing one elected official to declare: "it's the most 2-6 cost-effective program in the state government"; and 2-7 WHEREAS, In the course of setting a standard of integrity and 2-8 performance, she has touched and helped mold the lives of countless 2-9 young Main Street managers; and 2-10 WHEREAS, She retired as a Deputy Director of the Commission 2-11 under Executive Director Curtis Tunnell on August 31, 1996 after 2-12 more than a quarter century of service, under five separate 2-13 governors, leaving a rich legacy in the preservation and 2-14 revitalization of scores of communities across Texas; and 2-15 WHEREAS, She was blessed throughout her life by a loving and 2-16 supportive family including: her husband, Julian Read; her two 2-17 daughters Courtney Hoffman and Ellen Read; and three grandchildren, 2-18 Faye Hoffman, Kathryn Hoffman, and Read Hoffman; now, therefore, be 2-19 it 2-20 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas 2-21 Legislature hereby commend Anice Barber Read as an expression of 2-22 gratitude on behalf of all Texans for her numerous contributions to 2-23 our heritage and let this resolution be passed in her honor; and be 2-24 it further 2-25 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 3-1 prepared for her husband and her two daughters as an expression of 3-2 highest regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
