                                 R E S O L U T I O N

 1-1           WHEREAS, On February 26, 1997, many proud residents of

 1-2     Navarro County will gather in Austin to celebrate Navarro County

 1-3     Day at the State Capitol, and this festive event is a fitting

 1-4     opportunity to extol the many virtues of the area; and

 1-5           WHEREAS, Sprawling across more than 1,000 square miles of

 1-6     gently rolling prairie and woodland, Navarro County is a rich

 1-7     repository of both abundant natural resources and colorful Texas

 1-8     history, and the county's fortunate inhabitants take justifiable

 1-9     satisfaction in these assets; and

1-10           WHEREAS, Originally inhabited by Native American tribes,

1-11     including Iones, Kickapoos, and Comanches, Navarro County was

1-12     founded in 1846, and the cotton, tobacco, and produce crops that

1-13     covered the area quickly established it as a center for

1-14     agricultural trade; and

1-15           WHEREAS, In 1894, city employees drilling for water hit oil

1-16     instead, and petroleum replaced peaches and pecans as the region's

1-17     preeminent export; since that time manufacturing, construction, and

1-18     food processing have also taken their places as mainstays of the

1-19     local economy, and the area's many attributes continue to attract

1-20     new industry and investment; and

1-21           WHEREAS, Residents of Navarro County revel in their

1-22     multifaceted cultural heritage, and this appreciation of their

1-23     roots is reflected in such area attractions as Corsicana's Pioneer

1-24     Village, a historical recreation of a nineteenth-century town; the

 2-1     Gaston C. Gooch Library, which houses a collection of over 44,000

 2-2     pieces of Native American art that is among the finest of its kind;

 2-3     and the Lefty Frizzell Country Music Museum, dedicated to the life

 2-4     and art of local hero and country music legend Lefty Frizzell; and

 2-5           WHEREAS, The region is also a sportsman's paradise, boasting

 2-6     outstanding fishing and boating on Richland-Chambers Lake and

 2-7     Navarro Mills Lake, while less athletically inclined visitors may

 2-8     sample the internationally famous Corsicana fruitcake that has been

 2-9     the pride of Collin Street Bakery for over a century; and

2-10           WHEREAS, Navarro County has always been characterized by its

2-11     dynamic and forward-thinking citizenry, and even as these notable

2-12     Texans look with pride on the region's past, they eagerly await the

2-13     challenges and opportunities of the years to come; now, therefore,

2-14     be it

2-15           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas

2-16     Legislature hereby recognize February 26, 1997, as Navarro County

2-17     Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the Navarro

2-18     County delegation; and, be it further

2-19           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be

2-20     prepared for the members of the Navarro County delegation as an

2-21     expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
