By McClendon H.R. No. 238 75R6327 SAJ-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, For many years, the San Antonio community has 1-2 benefited from the vision and leadership of Eugene E. Coleman, Sr., 1-3 and it is a distinct privilege to honor him at this time; and 1-4 WHEREAS, A graduate of Texas Southern University, Mr. Coleman 1-5 has enjoyed a lengthy and successful career as the owner of Coleman 1-6 Photography Studio in San Antonio; during the late 1940s, he 1-7 founded the SNAP News, and he has used that enterprise to champion 1-8 many worthy causes in the community throughout the years; and 1-9 WHEREAS, Mr. Coleman has further served the people of San 1-10 Antonio through his support of several important initiatives; he 1-11 helped to secure the first block grant funds to organize the 1-12 Economic Opportunity Development Corporation, which in turn has 1-13 financed the Barbara Jordan Center and the East & West 1-14 Multi-Purpose Centers; and 1-15 WHEREAS, In addition, this eminent Texan worked with others 1-16 to promote equal employment opportunities for African Americans 1-17 and was a leader in the movement to integrate local restaurants, 1-18 hotels, and public facilities, to the benefit of his fellow San 1-19 Antonians; and 1-20 WHEREAS, His altruism extends to other areas as well, for 1-21 Mr. Coleman has organized several progressive organizations, 1-22 including the Bexar County Opportunities Industrialization Center, 1-23 the Count My Blessings Hall of Fame, the Alamo City Lions Club, and 1-24 Project A.B.L.E. (Assistance by Learning and Earning); he has also 2-1 helped countless young women to take pride in their heritage 2-2 through his involvement with a number of local pageants; and 2-3 WHEREAS, Mr. Coleman's remarkable contributions in behalf of 2-4 others have earned him well-deserved acclaim; Guadalupe College 2-5 awarded him an honorary doctorate in humanities, and the City of 2-6 San Antonio dedicated an underpass in his name in recognition of 2-7 his stalwart service to the civil rights movement; and 2-8 WHEREAS, Eugene Coleman, Sr., has enhanced the quality of 2-9 life in the San Antonio community in countless ways, and his 2-10 exceptional commitment is a source of inspiration to all who are 2-11 privileged to know him; now, therefore, be it 2-12 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas 2-13 Legislature hereby commend Eugene E. Coleman, Sr., for his 2-14 exemplary civic and professional involvement and extend to him 2-15 warmest best wishes for continued success and happiness in all his 2-16 future endeavors; and, be it further 2-17 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-18 prepared for Mr. Coleman as an expression of high regard by the 2-19 Texas House of Representatives.
