R E S O L U T I O N

 1-1           WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to honor

 1-2     David Bernsen of Beaumont on the occasion of his retirement from

 1-3     the Texas Transportation Commission, the three-member governing

 1-4     body of the Texas Department of Transportation, which is

 1-5     responsible for more than $3 billion in expenditures each year on

 1-6     Texas roadways; and

 1-7           WHEREAS, Appointed in 1991 by Governor Ann Richards,

 1-8     Mr. Bernsen has helped meet the growing transportation needs of the

 1-9     citizens of Texas throughout his tenure on the commission, and he

1-10     served with distinction as commission chairman from 1993 to 1995

1-11     and as an ex-officio member of the Texas Turnpike Authority; and

1-12           WHEREAS, In addition to his public service, this exemplary

1-13     Texan is a partner in the Beaumont law firm of Bernsen, Jamail, and

1-14     Goodson, and is a member of the State Bar of Texas, the U.S. Court

1-15     of Appeals for the 5th and 11th circuits, and the U.S. District

1-16     Court for the Eastern, Southern, and Northern districts of Texas;

1-17     and

1-18           WHEREAS, Mr. Bernsen also maintains membership in a number of

1-19     prestigious professional organizations, including the Jefferson and

1-20     Harris county bar associations, the Federation of Insurance and

1-21     Corporate Counsel, the International Association of Defense

1-22     Counsel, the Trial Attorneys of America, the American Bar

1-23     Association, and the Texas Association of Defense Counsel, where he

1-24     held the positions of director and vice president; and

 2-1           WHEREAS, Equally active in civic and community affairs, he

 2-2     has served as director of the Martin Luther King, Jr., Center

 2-3     Support Group of Southeast Texas and has supported Lamar University

 2-4     through his work as vice president of the Cardinal Club and

 2-5     chairman of the Intercollegiate Athletic Task Force; in recognition

 2-6     of his many contributions to the university, Mr. Bernsen was

 2-7     inducted into the Lamar University Hall of Honor; and

 2-8           WHEREAS, Supported in his public service and all his many

 2-9     endeavors by his devoted wife, Dinah, and their children Taylor and

2-10     Cade, Mr. Bernsen is a noteworthy Texan who is indeed deserving of

2-11     special recognition; now, therefore, be it

2-12           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas

2-13     Legislature hereby commend David Bernsen for his exemplary tenure

2-14     of service to the State of Texas as a member of the Texas

2-15     Transportation Commission; and, be it further

2-16           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be

2-17     prepared for David Bernsen as an expression of highest regard by

2-18     the Texas House of Representatives.
