R E S O L U T I O N

 1-1           WHEREAS, The family and many friends of Ellen Barton Nichols

 1-2     were deeply saddened by the passing of this highly regarded woman

 1-3     on November 5, 1996, at the age of 75; and

 1-4           WHEREAS, A native Texan, Mrs. Nichols was born November 10,

 1-5     1920, in Beaumont to Claudia and Ell Barton and was graduated in

 1-6     her youth from South Park High School; and

 1-7           WHEREAS, In 1939, she married her beloved husband, Howard

 1-8     Grant Nichols, and the couple were blessed with 57 years of shared

 1-9     happiness and four cherished sons; and

1-10           WHEREAS, Throughout her lifetime, Mrs. Nichols drew strength

1-11     from her faith and her family; a charter member of St. Andrew's

1-12     Presbyterian Church, she served as a Sunday school teacher, as

1-13     president of the Women of the Church, and in various other offices,

1-14     including deacon; and

1-15           WHEREAS, Active in the Nichols Home Building Company for many

1-16     years, Mrs. Nichols was also an avid international traveler, and

1-17     she and her husband enjoyed trips to many foreign countries;

1-18     throughout all her endeavors, however, Mrs. Nichols remained

1-19     devoted to her wonderful family and to St.  Andrew's Church; and

1-20           WHEREAS, In all aspects of her life, Ellen Nichols embodied

1-21     dedication, warmth, and graciousness; though her presence is gone

1-22     from us now, her unique spirit has endured in the hearts of those

1-23     who were privileged to know her; now, therefore, be it

1-24           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas

 2-1     Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Ellen Barton Nichols

 2-2     and extend deepest sympathy to the members of her family: to her

 2-3     husband, Howard Grant Nichols; to her sons and daughters-in-law,

 2-4     Howard Nichols, Jr., and his wife Sally, Reed Ell Nichols, Kenneth

 2-5     Nichols and his wife Paula, Allan Nichols and his wife Kay, and

 2-6     Susanne Nichols; to her grandchildren; and to all the relatives and

 2-7     many friends of this beloved woman; and, be it further

 2-8           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be

 2-9     prepared for the members of her family and that when the Texas

2-10     House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of

2-11     Ellen Barton Nichols.
