R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, Texans are known throughout the world for the fierce
1-2 pride we take in our colorful past, and the generations of
1-3 historians who have preserved and passed on our common heritage are
1-4 truly deserving of our heartfelt gratitude; one such dedicated
1-5 professional is Dr. Archie Philip McDonald of Stephen F. Austin
1-6 University, and it is fitting at this time to extol his many
1-7 achievements as a scholar, writer, and educator; and
1-8 WHEREAS, A graduate of Lamar University, Dr. McDonald
1-9 received his master's degree in American history from Rice
1-10 University before pursuing his doctoral studies at Louisiana State
1-11 University; in 1964, he joined the faculty of Stephen F. Austin
1-12 University, where he is currently a professor of history, and his
1-13 excellence as an instructor has been recognized by his selection as
1-14 Regents' Professor and as the 1976 Alumni Distinguished Professor;
1-15 and
1-16 WHEREAS, The esteem in which Dr. McDonald is held by his
1-17 professional peers is evident from the many historical
1-18 organizations to which he has lent his experience and leadership; a
1-19 former president of the Texas State Historical Association, he has
1-20 also chaired the Texas Committee for the Humanities, the State
1-21 Board of Review for the National Register, and the Old San Antonio
1-22 Road Preservation Commission, and since 1994, has served as vice
1-23 chair for the Texas Historical Commission; and
1-24 WHEREAS, Committed to sharing his vast knowledge of Southern
2-1 and Texas history with a wider audience, Dr. McDonald has written
2-2 and edited a number of books on these subjects, including his most
2-3 recent, Historic Texas: An Illustrated Chronicle of Texas' Past,
2-4 and his work has won both the praise of his fellow historians and
2-5 the admiration of readers from all walks of life; and
2-6 WHEREAS, Throughout the years, Dr. McDonald has drawn
2-7 strength and inspiration from his close-knit family, and he and his
2-8 wife, Judith Barrett McDonald, take great pride in their sons,
2-9 Tucker Barrett McDonald and Christopher Lee McDonald; and
2-10 WHEREAS, Archie Philip McDonald's many noteworthy
2-11 contributions to the cultural life of the Lone Star State have
2-12 sharpened and strengthened our understanding of our rich heritage,
2-13 and his accomplishments as a scholar of history are indeed
2-14 deserving of special praise and recognition; now, therefore, be it
2-15 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas
2-16 Legislature hereby honor Dr. Archie Philip McDonald on his
2-17 distinguished career as a historian and extend to him sincere best
2-18 wishes for continued success and happiness in the years to come;
2-19 and, be it further
2-20 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-21 prepared for Dr. McDonald as an expression of high regard by the
2-22 Texas House of Representatives.
