R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The Honorable Bob Bullock has been named the 1997 1-2 Border Texan of the Year, and he will receive this prestigious 1-3 award at a dinner being held in his honor on March 7, 1997; and 1-4 WHEREAS, The Border Texan of the Year award was developed in 1-5 1989 by the Hidalgo Chamber of Commerce in association with Hidalgo 1-6 County's BorderFest, the largest and oldest outdoor heritage and 1-7 music festival in the Rio Grande Valley; past recipients of this 1-8 award include such notable Texans as former U.S. Congressman Kika 1-9 de la Garza and former U.S. Senator and Secretary of the Treasury 1-10 Lloyd M. Bentsen, Jr.; and 1-11 WHEREAS, Honorees are selected on the basis of their 1-12 contributions to the improvement of the Rio Grande Valley and the 1-13 surrounding South Texas region; the selection committee is made up 1-14 of prominent Rio Grande Valley citizens who have demonstrated a 1-15 lasting commitment to this vast and significant area; and 1-16 WHEREAS, Lieutenant Governor Bullock was sworn in for his 1-17 second term of office on January 17, 1995, and his tenure as 1-18 presiding officer of the Texas Senate has been well regarded and 1-19 highly effective; before gaining this important position, he served 1-20 as Texas comptroller of public accounts, secretary of state, 1-21 assistant attorney general, and member of the Texas Historical 1-22 Commission; and 1-23 WHEREAS, A former member of the Texas House of 1-24 Representatives as well, Lieutenant Governor Bullock is a native of 2-1 Hillsboro and a graduate of Hill College, Texas Tech University, 2-2 and Baylor Law School; his list of well-deserved awards and 2-3 accolades is extensive and varied, and it is a privilege to join 2-4 the many organizations that have chosen to honor this dedicated 2-5 public servant; now, therefore, be it 2-6 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas 2-7 Legislature hereby congratulate the Honorable Bob Bullock on being 2-8 named 1997 Border Texan of the Year and extend to him sincere best 2-9 wishes for continued success and happiness in the years to come; 2-10 and, be it further 2-11 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-12 prepared for Lieutenant Governor Bullock as an expression of 2-13 highest regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
