R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, The wedding anniversary of two individuals who have
1-2 shared 50 happy and rewarding years of marriage is truly a
1-3 memorable occasion, and Jim and Iris Mathews will commemorate one
1-4 such event on March 16, 1997, when they celebrate their golden
1-5 wedding anniversary; and
1-6 WHEREAS, The former Iris Alicia Pryor was born in Mineola,
1-7 Texas, to Mary W. and R. H. Pryor, while her husband, Jim Houston
1-8 Mathews, also hails from Texas, having been born in DeKalb to Mazie
1-9 and T. D. Mathews; the couple were united in marriage on March 16,
1-10 1947, at the First Baptist Church in DeKalb, with G. D. "Skinner"
1-11 Roden serving as best man at the ceremony and Mrs. Mary Lee King as
1-12 matron of honor; after taking their vows, the newlywed couple spent
1-13 their honeymoon in Hot Springs, Arkansas; and
1-14 WHEREAS, Mr. Mathews served his country with distinction as a
1-15 member of the U.S. Army in the Pacific theater of operations during
1-16 World War II, and Mrs. Mathews underwent nurses' training at
1-17 Highland Sanitarium in Shreveport, Louisiana, Charity Hospital in
1-18 New Orleans, and Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland; and
1-19 WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Mathews have been partners in every
1-20 aspect of life; they worked together harmoniously for many years at
1-21 their family-owned business, Mathews Cleaners, and also established
1-22 Mathews Real Estate, which they built into a highly successful
1-23 enterprise; and
1-24 WHEREAS, The couple also share their abiding faith as active
2-1 members of the First Baptist Church; and
2-2 WHEREAS, For half a century Jim and Iris Mathews have shared
2-3 a strong and lasting marriage filled with many joyful times and
2-4 cherished memories; their relationship is a continuing source of
2-5 pride and inspiration to all who have had the pleasure of knowing
2-6 them, and it is indeed appropriate that they be given special
2-7 legislative recognition at this time; now, therefore, be it
2-8 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas
2-9 Legislature hereby congratulate Jim and Iris Mathews on the
2-10 occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary; and, be it further
2-11 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-12 prepared for Mr. and Mrs. Mathews as an expression of high regard
2-13 by the Texas House of Representatives.
