R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Dr. Betty Pearce Stephenson of Sugar Land has 1-2 recently retired from medical practice, drawing to a close a 1-3 noteworthy career that has spanned more than 43 years of dedicated 1-4 service to her community; and 1-5 WHEREAS, A native of Abilene, she was graduated from 1-6 Hardin-Simmons University and completed her postgraduate studies in 1-7 biochemistry at the University of Colorado; she set a pattern for 1-8 distinction that she has maintained throughout her lifetime when 1-9 she was one of only five women in her class at Baylor College of 1-10 Medicine to earn a medical degree in 1953; and 1-11 WHEREAS, After serving with The Methodist Hospital in Houston 1-12 and St. Vincent's Hospital and Shriners Hospital in Los Angeles, 1-13 Dr. Stephenson embarked on a lengthy and rewarding association with 1-14 Houston's Memorial Southwest Hospital, where her expertise, 1-15 commitment, and concern for her patients have earned her the 1-16 gratitude of the community for 26 years; and 1-17 WHEREAS, This eminent physician has continued to make many 1-18 significant contributions to her chosen profession as a clinical 1-19 associate professor at Baylor College of Medicine; a fellow of the 1-20 American College of Anesthesiologists, she has shared her extensive 1-21 knowledge and experience with her colleagues as a member of several 1-22 professional organizations, including the local, state, and 1-23 national chapters of the Society of Anesthesiologists, the 1-24 International Anesthesia Research Society, the Texas Medical 2-1 Association, the American Medical Association, and the Harris 2-2 County Medical Society, serving as the society's first woman 2-3 president in 1986; and 2-4 WHEREAS, Her exceptional service has earned her much renown, 2-5 for she was named a distinguished alumna of both Baylor College of 2-6 Medicine and Hardin-Simmons University, and she was further honored 2-7 by the latter institution when it awarded her a doctorate in 2-8 humanities in 1994; and 2-9 WHEREAS, Throughout the years, Dr. Stephenson has maintained 2-10 an abiding commitment to her community, and the many organizations 2-11 that have welcomed her active involvement include the San Jacinto 2-12 Girl Scouts, the United Way, and Bellaire United Methodist Church, 2-13 as well as the boards of The Doctor's Club of Houston, the Museum 2-14 of Medical Science, and First Republic Bank Fannin; and 2-15 WHEREAS, In all her endeavors, she has enjoyed the love and 2-16 support of her family, which includes her husband of more than 45 2-17 years, Dr. Charles T. Stephenson, Sr., and the couple's four 2-18 children, Patricia Stephenson McGrew, Karen Stephenson Baker, 2-19 Charles T. Stephenson, Jr., and John W. Stephenson; and 2-20 WHEREAS, An illustrious physician, Dr. Betty Stephenson has 2-21 contributed greatly to the medical arts in Texas, and she is indeed 2-22 worthy of special recognition for her outstanding achievements; 2-23 now, therefore, be it 2-24 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas 2-25 Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Betty Pearce Stephenson on the 2-26 occasion of her retirement and extend to her warmest best wishes 2-27 for continued success and happiness in all her future endeavors; 3-1 and, be it further 3-2 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 3-3 prepared for Dr. Stephenson as an expression of high regard by the 3-4 Texas House of Representatives.
