                                 R E S O L U T I O N

 1-1           WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives takes pride in

 1-2     joining the American Heart Association, Texas Affiliate,

 1-3     Incorporated, in recognizing Wednesday, March 5, 1997, as American

 1-4     Heart Association Day; and

 1-5           WHEREAS, The American Heart Association is a nonprofit,

 1-6     voluntary health organization that is dedicated to the reduction of

 1-7     disability and death from cardiovascular disease and stroke; and

 1-8           WHEREAS, Each year, over 220,000 volunteers in Texas dedicate

 1-9     their time and energy to supporting the research, education

1-10     programs, and advocacy efforts of the American Heart Association;

1-11     and

1-12           WHEREAS, In 1996, 400,000 people in Texas were trained

1-13     through the association's cardiopulmonary resuscitation training

1-14     programs and advance cardiac life support training programs, and

1-15     the association funded $6.9 million in meritorious cardiovascular

1-16     research projects in our state; and

1-17           WHEREAS, The association has distributed heart health

1-18     education materials and programs to millions of Texans in order to

1-19     increase the public's knowledge of the risk factors associated with

1-20     heart disease and stroke; heart disease is the number one killer,

1-21     and stroke is the number one cause of disability in Texas; and

 2-1           WHEREAS, Due to the efforts of the American Heart Association

 2-2     and volunteers across the state and to the contributions of many

 2-3     individuals, families, foundations, and corporations,

 2-4     cardiovascular disease is now declining in our state; the

 2-5     percentage of deaths in Texas due to cardiovascular disease

 2-6     declined four percent from 1983 to 1993; now, therefore, be it

 2-7           RESOLVED, That the Texas House of Representatives of the 75th

 2-8     Texas Legislature hereby commend the American Heart Association,

 2-9     Texas Affiliate, Incorporated, and the volunteers and many

2-10     contributors who are working to curtail the incidence of

2-11     cardiovascular disease in our state and encourage all Texans to

2-12     recognize March 5, 1997, as American Heart Association Day; and, be

2-13     it further

2-14           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be

2-15     prepared for the American Heart Association, Texas Affiliate,

2-16     Incorporated, as an expression of esteem from the Texas House of

2-17     Representatives.
