R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, The recent passing of Glynn A. "Buddy" Williams on
1-2 February 17, 1997, at the age of 81, has brought a great loss to
1-3 the many friends and relatives of this esteemed Bryan civic leader;
1-4 and
1-5 WHEREAS, Born October 1, 1915, in Richards, Texas,
1-6 Mr. Williams later relocated to Bryan and became one of the area's
1-7 most prominent businessmen; a true entrepreneur, he established
1-8 Williams Insurance Agency and Williams Mortgage Company in 1945,
1-9 and two decades later, he founded First Federal Savings, serving as
1-10 president and chairman of the board until his retirement; and
1-11 WHEREAS, This dynamic individual also held the position of
1-12 chairman of the Brazos County Democratic Party for 20 years, was a
1-13 presidential elector in 1960, and served as a two-term president
1-14 and 20-year member of the Brazos River Authority; and
1-15 WHEREAS, He devoted his time and energy to a number of other
1-16 worthy organizations as well, including the Boy Scouts, Brazos
1-17 Union Lodge No. 129, the Arabia Shrine Temple, the Brazos Valley
1-18 Shrine Club, and the Bryan Noon Lions Club; he also served as
1-19 director of the Briarcrest Country Club and the Brazos Valley Red
1-20 Cross and was a founding member and the first president of the
1-21 Bryan-College Station Jaycees; and
1-22 WHEREAS, Mr. Williams was a staunch supporter of Texas A&M
1-23 University, having served on the Texas A&M Cadet Council, and
1-24 provided several scholarships for members of the Corps of Cadets;
2-1 additionally, he founded Brazos Duplexes, a nonprofit housing
2-2 corporation he created to provide low-cost housing to university
2-3 students; and
2-4 WHEREAS, A man of deep and abiding religious convictions,
2-5 Mr. Williams was an active member of the First Baptist Church in
2-6 Bryan and served the congregation there as chairman of the finance
2-7 committee and superintendent of the Young People's Department; and
2-8 WHEREAS, Glynn A. "Buddy" Williams was a man of integrity and
2-9 vision, and although his warmth and wisdom are gone from us now,
2-10 his remarkable spirit will surely live on in the hearts of the many
2-11 people whose lives he touched during his time on this earth; now,
2-12 therefore, be it
2-13 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas
2-14 Legislature hereby honor the life of Glynn A. "Buddy" Williams and
2-15 extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife,
2-16 Verna Williams; to his daughter, Martha Williams; to his son and
2-17 daughter-in-law, Glynn Williams, Jr., and Jean Williams; to his
2-18 brother, Carl D. Williams; to his niece and nephew; to his
2-19 grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and to the many other
2-20 friends and relatives of this beloved gentleman; and, be it further
2-21 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-22 prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas
2-23 House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
2-24 Glynn A. "Buddy" Williams.
