                                 R E S O L U T I O N

 1-1           WHEREAS, March 7, 1997, marks the promotion of San Antonio

 1-2     police officer Manuel B. Longoria, Jr., to the rank of deputy

 1-3     chief, and this noteworthy achievement is indeed worthy of special

 1-4     praise and recognition; and

 1-5           WHEREAS, Before joining the San Antonio Police Department in

 1-6     1968, Deputy Chief Longoria served with distinction in the United

 1-7     States Army; his military honors include the Meritorious Service

 1-8     Medal, the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, and the Vietnam Campaign

 1-9     Medal, and he is a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars;

1-10     and

1-11           WHEREAS, Deputy Chief Longoria began his tenure with the

1-12     department as a patrol officer, but as his outstanding skills as a

1-13     lawman became evident, he was promoted to detective and then

1-14     sergeant, eventually supervising 20 detectives in the homicide

1-15     squad; and

1-16           WHEREAS, Over the next few years, promotions to lieutenant

1-17     and captain followed, and since 1990 he has acted as commander of

1-18     several areas of the department, including internal affairs, the

1-19     violent crime section, the San Antonio Police Training Academy, and

1-20     most recently the special investigations section; and

1-21           WHEREAS, Deputy Chief Longoria's pursuit of excellence in the

1-22     field of law enforcement is aptly demonstrated by his commitment to

1-23     furthering his education; a graduate of Southwest Texas State

1-24     University, he has also completed course work at San Antonio

 2-1     College and has attended numerous supervisory and management

 2-2     schools, receiving training in police tactics, crowd and riot

 2-3     control, and crisis intervention; and

 2-4           WHEREAS, A vital and valued member of the police force,

 2-5     Deputy Chief Longoria has dedicated his time and energy to a number

 2-6     of professional associations, and he is an active member of the

 2-7     High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Executive Board, the Chief's

 2-8     Quality Management Circle, and the Advisory Action Board, among

 2-9     many others; and

2-10           WHEREAS, For almost 30 years, Manuel B. Longoria, Jr., has

2-11     committed himself to the protection and service of the citizens of

2-12     San Antonio, and as he assumes his new role as deputy chief, we

2-13     join his friends and colleagues in honoring his great contributions

2-14     to the community; now, therefore, be it

2-15           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 75th Texas

2-16     Legislature hereby congratulate San Antonio police officer Manuel

2-17     B. Longoria, Jr., on his promotion to the rank of deputy chief and

2-18     extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success in the

2-19     future; and, be it further

2-20           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be

2-21     prepared for Deputy Chief Longoria as an expression of high regard

2-22     by the Texas House of Representatives.
